Tyler Austin’s breakout season has earned him a ticket to Tampa (Photo Credit: Charleston Riverdogs Official Website).

Some of the New York Yankees top organizational prospects took another big step towards the Major Leagues tonight, earning promotions to their next respective levels. For others, their dreams took a huge hit as they were slapped with demotions that some may never recover from.

Three of my top five prospects from Memorial Day were moved from Charleston to Tampa – OFs Mason Williams and Tyler Austin, and C Gary Sanchez. Williams and Sanchez were considered to be two of the top 100 prospects in baseball entering the season, and Austin’s breakout season certainly has him gaining fast. He is the lone Futures Game representative from the Yankees.

Rob Segedin

With those transactions came the news that a pair of All-Stars for High-A Tampa were moving up to Trenton. OF Rob Segedin and C J.R. Murphy received notice that they’ll be joining the Thunder. OF Neil Medchill will also be joining Trenton, his second stint with the club this season. Interestingly enough, standout closer Mark Montgomery did not receive a promotion to Trenton. For Segedin, a New Jersey native, it will surely be a welcome homecoming.

To start clearing room for some of the new promotions, moves had to be made the other way as well. Thunder catcher Kyle Higashioka was informed he had been sent down to clear some roster space in Trenton. Additionally, C Tyson Blaser, OF Eduardo Sosa, and IF Jose Toussen were shipped to Charleston to clear room for Tampa’s new imports.

With any luck, I’ll get down to Trenton this weekend to take a look at Segedin, Murphy, and Medchill, as well as guys such as Vidal Nuno and Mikey O’Brien, who I’ve yet to see this year. For now though, it looks like I’d see Brett Marshall on the hill if I do get down to New Jersey’s capital this weekend.
