Anibal Sanchez is better than you think

Anibal Sanchez has been on the edge of this writer's mind since his blazing debut in 2006 when he went 10-3 and pitched a no-hitter against the Azizona Diamondbacks. Since that rookie season, Sanchez has a record of 32-38. But he is better than that. He was better than his 13-12 record for the Marlins in 2010 and better than his 8-9 record for the Marlins last season. Much of...

Carlos Zambrano improved to...

Oviedo says he'll be ready for July

Reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo stood outside the Miami Marlins' spring training clubhouse Tuesday, eager to resume his career under a new name. He last pitched as Leo Nunez. His 2011 season ended abruptly in September after officials discovered he had been playing under a fake name since he turned professional in 2000. Oviedo was issued a new visa last week after clearing up his...

Marlins Pitcher faked identity but gets second chance

You might know him as Leo Nunez, a right-handed pitcher for the Miami Marlins. You might think he was 29 years old and from the Dominican Republic. Well actually, that last part is right. Leo Nunez is 29 and from the Dominican Republic, the pitcher on the other hand is 30 and is really called Juan Carlos Oviedo. In July, the Marlins will be getting a new pitcher, but one with a familiar...

Juan Carlos Oviedo/Leo Nunez You are probably asking yourself if you are reading this "Who the heck is Oviedo?" For those of us who grew up around the Orlando area, its a small town in Southeastern Seminole county. But that is irrelevant. Reinvented Carlos Zambrano

As I sat and watched Carlos Zambrano string together inning after inning against the Washington Nationals yesterday, I couldn’t help but think about the guy who we heard had major mechanic troubles at the tail end in Chicago. He was left for dead, but I think the baseball society would officially declare him “back” as of right now. I remember hearing tales of a bad delivery...
