Tonight on WFAN, Sandy Alderson said Jose Reyes‘s agents understood his positon, which was a five-year deal with a vesting option for a sixth year that could have got the deal to $100 million.
In fact, Alderson said he felt there was a chance on Friday night for the two sides to agree to a deal. However, he believes that as soon as the Marlins felt the Mets were back in it, Miami moved to get a deal done. According to Alderson, Jose’s agents contacted him Sunday to say his proposed five-year deal with a vesting option was no longer being considered.
In regards to how things played out, Alderson told Francesa:
I think things went very quickly from Friday through Saturday night and Sunday. I was in contact with the Greenbergs as late as Friday and I talked to them in general terms about things that they might consider. I got some relatively positive feedback on Friday.
