After seeing Johan Santana struggle mightily against the Braves on Tuesday night, New York Mets fans were left to worry about more than just the outcome of the game. A loss to Atlanta is never easy to stomach, but for me the real reason to reach for the Pepto was the thought that the 33-year-old lefty may not have been right physically in what turned out to be the shortest start of his career. Before you could turn around, New York was down 6-0 and Santana was rendered a mere spectator from the dugout for the better part of the game.
One thing that especially stood out to me was Johan’s inability to put hitters away and it turns out his failure to record a strikeout was a rarity, to say the least.

Tonight was Santana’s first career start without a strikeout. Had 243 consecutive appearances with at least one K. #mets

Fortunately, Santana put my mind at ease after the game when told reporters he felt OK, but just didn’t have it:
I feel fine, it was just a rough one. Get behind in the count and they hit the ball a couple times in the right spot. They took advantage of it, made me throw a lot of pitches. Even though I felt good. I warmed up and felt good. But, it’s just one of those days that things didn’t work out the way we wanted it to. … Today was just a rough day. Just bounce back and come back again and see what happens.”
The Mets ace later proclaimed on Twitter that he will bounce back, which may seem like an obvious statement to make, but it’s still assuring as it doesn’t sound like the statement of an injured hurler.
