For all that's been made of how Jordan Schafer fits into the Astros' new patience
profile of higher walk and strikeout totals, there's another element of the game that he
adds to a team with little. In replacing Michael Bourn, whom he was traded for, Schafer
provides one of the few significant base-stealing threats on the roster. Through the Astros' 1-0 victory Friday, Schafer maintains a pace for 56 steals and 20
times caught, putting him roughly at the threshold of success that must be maintained to
make it a worthwhile endeavor at all. His career numbers of 35 steals and nine times
caught are far greater than his ratio of 87:50 in the minors, when he was really
struggling with the art despite great speed. "I never felt comfortable stealing bases (in the minors)," Schafer said. "I still have
some stuff I need to work on, but I feel very comfortable doing it now." Schafer gives plenty of credit for those who have helped him ...

Lowrie enjoying healthy start to season
Entering the 2012 season, oft-injured Houston Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie hadn't appeared in more than 88 major league games in a season. But he has remained healthy thus far, and the Stanford product is batting .301 with a .387 on-base percentage and some power.
Oh god; Buccos get shut out by Astros
The Astros may have had the same record as the Pirates heading into last night’s game but come on, it’s the Astros – they. are. terrible. And coming from a bunch of Bucco fans, that’s saying something.
The Astros have somehow put together a decent offense and pitching staff that both rank in the top 15 – think of how much better the Bucs’ record would look if they...

MLB Insiders: Houston Astros

Bring on the Astros
I said before this series started that I wanted to see the Pirates go at least 6-3. They need a sweep of the Astros to get there. Bud Norris goes for the Astros against the recently excellent James McDonald. First pitch tonight is at 7:05.
