The brother of San Francisco Giants outfielder Nate Schierholtz was sentenced Wednesday to a year in county jail and five years probation for drunken driving and injuring four people in a series of hit-and-run crashes in Danville this past summer.
Cainan Schierholtz, 23, was driving with a 0.19 blood alcohol level -- more than twice the legal limit -- when he struck a bicyclist, a pedestrian, two moving vehicles and a light pole in a one-mile stretch. The rampage started on Danville Boulevard about 10:00 a.m. on Aug. 1, and it ended when witnesses blocked Schierholtz's red pickup on Linda Mesa Avenue until police arrived.
Schierholtz, who has been in been in jail since his arrest, was also convicted of drunken driving when he was 17.
On Wednesday, he pleaded no contest to two felonies -- drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries -- and one misdemeanor hit-and-run. He agreed to waive his 180 day's credit for jail time already served. He also voluntarily completed a 90-day rehabilitation program while in custody.
In addition to probation and the year jail sentence that started Wednesday, Schierholtz (who is from San Ramon) was ordered to attend an 18-month DUI school after his release and to use an ignition interlock device for two years once he regains his driver license.
