Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to the Washington Nationals gave the Marlins their second consecutive shutout loss to begin the 2013 season.   Another wasted performance by a starting pitcher took place as Kevin Slowey gave Miami five and a third solid innings of work.   This is now the longest it has taken the Marlins to score a run to begin a season in franchise history. In Slowey’s first Major League start since 2011, the right-hander looked poised and flashed some good stuff.   Slowey even struck Bryce Harper out which is quite an accomplishment right now for a Marlins’ pitcher.  The young phenom doubled later in the game off the bullpen and has almost as many hits this year himself as the entire Marlins’ team does.  Slowey, Ryan Webb and  A.J. Ramos each allowed a run with Webb’s being of the unearned variety.  Slowey struck out four and walked three which ran his pitch count up to 85.  Mike Redmond made the decision to go to Webb in a first and third situation in the sixth which Webb quickly escaped with a double play ball. Justin Ruggiano got the start against lefty Gio Gonzalez and doubled giving the Marlins their only extra base hit of the game.    Giancarlo Stanton had a tough game on both sides of the field striking out twice on pitches in the dirt while also misplaying a ball in right field.   The misplay turned a Ryan Zimmerman double into a triple and followed one of Stanton’s strike outs possibly showing that the slugger took his at-bat into the field with him. The Marlins will try again to score a run on Thursday but it won’t get much easier as they are set to face Jordan Zimmermann.   Scheduled to start for Miami is Wade LeBlanc.
