Left handed relief pitcher Sean Burnett and the Washington Nationals agreed to terms on a 2 year extension with a mutual option for a 3rd year. By signing Burnett to an extension the Nats covered what would have been his last 2 seasons of arbitration eligibility.
For the 2011 season Burnett will earn $1.4 million plus a $100,000 signing bonus and then in 2012 he will make $2.3 million with the Nationals. Those are the base salary numbers but there are incentive qualifiers that would kick in if he reaches them making the contract worth even more for him. For example if he becomes the teams closer and saves 55 games he would make an additional $250,000.
Burnett who is only 28 years old is coming off an impressive season for the Nats having posted a 2.14 era over 63.0 innings of relief pitching.
