The Seattle Mariners have hired Aaron Goldsmith to team with veteran broadcaster Rick Rizzs on radio broadcasts beginning with the 2013 season. The Mariners made the announcement on Thursday. Goldsmith becomes a permanent fixture after the Mariners went two seasons with a rotation of announcers working alongside Rizzs following the death of Hall of Fame broadcaster Dave Niehaus. Rizzs will remain the team's lead radio announcer. Goldsmith spent the 2012 season as the lead broadcaster for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox. Before that, he called games for two seasons with Double-A Frisco in the Texas League. In 2009, Goldsmith worked for Double-A Portland of the Eastern League.

Mariners in need of a Catcher without a plethora of options

The Mariners need to add depth at catcher The Mariners traded catcher and fan favorite John Jaso to Oakland in a three team trade to receive 1B/OF Michael Morse. This is a trade the Mariners needed to make, in spite of his popularity; Jaso was a valuable pinch hitter/platoon player. If Michael Morse can return to 2011 form, then Seattle received an every day 1B/OF that will add...

John Jaso's plate discipline improves the Athletics

The Oakland Athletics won the American League West last season despite a virtual black hole on offense from the catching position. In 632 plate appearances by all of their catchers in 2012, the triple slash line from the position was: .204/.262/.325. That .587 OPS was abysmal and worked out to a 64 OPS+. And so it made sense for Billy Beane to use a couple of his pitching prospects...

Low Scoring Teams: Better Than You Might Expect

The Seattle Mariners offense has been awful the last few years. Historically awful, in fact. Over the last decade, the two lowest scoring teams have been the 2010 Mariners (513 runs) and the 2011 Mariners (556 runs). At 619 runs, the 2012 Mariners moved all the way up to just 17th worst in the last 10 years. After three seasons of offensive ineptitude, it’s not a big surprise...

There is one year left on Morse’s contract which will pay him $6.75 million in 2013. Morse became expendable...

To make room for Jaso on the 40-man roster, catcher George Kottaras...

Under The Greydar: Yakety Ack, Don’t Talk Back!

Throughout the annuls of history, we, as a human species have learned that it's not easy being green. While it's not easy being green, it is also not easy hitting at Safeco. Looking through the ballpark values, I can surmise that if I jumped off the roof of Safeco, I would have a hard time hitting the ground. It's well documented, the struggles of high-ceiling prospects...

Appreciating John Jaso

John Jaso isn’t much of a household name. A year ago, he was traded for felon-turned-reliever Josh Lueke, as the Rays decided that Jaso’s deficiencies rendered expendable. The Mariners picked him up as a depth piece, and then Eric Wedge buried him on the bench to start the season, as he watched Miguel Olivo and Jesus Montero do most of the catching at the start of the season...

The Mariners also sent catcher John Jaso to the A's, and the Woshington Post reported the Nationals also received 24-year-old minor leaguer...
