Steady as she goes My selection for Mariners MVP so far this year might not be who you would think. I could go with the long ball selection and pick Raul Ibanez, or the sexy selection and pick Felix Hernandez. But I’m going with the guy who has been the most consistent for this club all season long, Kyle Seager. He’s not the biggest name on the team, nor will he win any batting titles or home run records, yet he is the only player on this team with multiple double digit hitting streaks this season. Calm, cool and collected is the way he approaches each at bat, and he has come up with the big hit in clutch situations more than any of his teammates this year. The prime factor in selecting a MVP candidate is if the team will win, lose or maintain their record if said player was not around. That is a tough call for a baseball team All I know is, the Mariners would not be any better without him, and probably would indeed be worse without his bat in the starting lineup. If you think about it for a second, moving Seager out of the lineup would mean his replacement would be Brad Miller or Nick Franklin. Not too shabby actually, but then who takes their spots in the infield? We’re left with one name, Brendan Ryan. Your Seattle Mariners 2013 MVP (Photo: Google) Ryan’s D is better than all three of those players hands down, but with Seager’s bat out of the lineup it would be hard to rely on Brendan Ryan to come up with those types of numbers. Through the last day of the unofficial first half of the season Seager is hitting a team high .293. Next best on the team is Kendrys Morales who is at .280. Seager is also coming into the break second on the team in homeruns with 15, nine behind team leader Raul Ibanez. Take those two numbers out of the equation and this team is in a world of hurt. What it means to be a ballplayer In this day and age most fans want their superstars to be all over their social networking sites. Tweets, status updates, Instagram photos etc… That’s all fine and dandy I guess, but I like my players’ to excel on the field and not on my cell phone. Kyle Seager is what I like to call an “old time ball player.” There’s nothing flashy about him at all. Hell, he doesn’t even look an athlete. Short, stubby, runs a little too awkward for the likes of most fans, but he still gives us his all during each plate appearance. He’s not even the best defensive selection at his position, nor was he the “one” who was supposed to make this team, let alone make the splash that he has. Streaking his way up through the minor leagues at a Mike Zunino pace, Seager took us fans by storm last season en route to his team high 20 homeruns. Now this year at the break, he is on pace to add to his career high by 10! Some might not agree with my selection, but if you think about it from a managers standpoint, he is the best player on our team. CLICK HERE CHECK OUT THE SEATTLE MARINERS CLUBHOUSE AT NWSB!
