The Seattle Mariners continued their streaky ways last week, going 2-4 on the backside of their road trip. The good news is that those 2 wins came against the Angels…IN Anaheim. The Mariners scored 26 runs over the course of the week while their opponents put up 31 on them.
The Mariners are 45-19 when they score 4+ runs. They achieved the 4 run mark 4 days this week, only winning 2 of those contests.
It’s the dog days of the season and the team is fighting furiously to not be left in the dust.
Lots of guys are making an impact recently, big AND small.
Let’s see who made the list this week.Who’s Hot Jason Vargas – SP
Jason Vargas made 2 starts this week, both excellent starts. Unfortunately for him, the offense couldn’t help him in 1 of those games. Vargas has truly become a top #2 pitcher in the American League, complimenting King Felix with some nasty stuff of his own.
Vargas is a smart pick up in any fantasy league. He has the most wins on the team and has had the most consistent run support of any starting pitcher this season. He will give your fantasy team that push you need to squeeze out wins in the end of the fantasy season and into the playoffs.
This week’s line: 16 1/3 innings, 15 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk, 7 strike outs, Win, LossJesus Montero – C/DH
Jesus Monterohas hit a hot streak and is helping the Mariners in a big way. Montero single handedly beat Jered Weaver and the Angels in the final game of the series and ended Weaver’s 9 game win streak. Montero has more than paid off this season and is looking like he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years.
John Jaso is proving why the Mariners went after him. Seen here celebrating a home run.
Montero would be a good addition to your fantasy team, especially right now during his hot streak.
This week’s line: 9 for 20 (.450) with 5 runs, 3 RBI, 1 walk, 1 strike out, 2 home runsKeep An Eye On John Jaso – C/DH
John Jaso has been surprising to some, but has proved to those that he was a wise pickup in the offseason. Jaso has provided some much needed power in certain situations where the Mariners couldn’t find it. He is becoming a great platoon option with Montero to switch off and on at C and DH.
Jaso is good in deep leagues with lots of roster spots. He is a good filler guy, but not a starter by any means.
This week’s line: 6 for 16 (.375) with 4 runs, 5 RBI, 4 walks, 3 strike outs, 2 home runs, 1 stolen baseKyle Seager – 3B
Kyle Seager has been streaky at best this season and he is currently riding a warm streak. He may be a future key to this team, but his inconsistency has been hurting him, being moved all around the field and the lineup.
Seager is best on the waiver wire for now, but if he becomes a consistent producer, he’s worth a shot. He’s getting lots of opportunities right now, let’s see how he capitalizes on them.
This week’s line: 7 for 25 (.280) with 2 runs, 5 RBI, 1 walk, 7 strike outs, 2 home runsWho’s Cold Dustin Ackley – 2B
Many, including myself, are still wondering why Dustin Ackley is still in Seattle and not in Tacoma with Justin Smoak. He may be the 2B of the future, but he is making the position irrelevant for the time being. He was the best hitter on this team and has dropped out of that role over the course of the season.
Ackley is NOT a good pickup for your fantasy team. Point. Blank. Period.
This week’s line: 5 for 28 (.178) with 3 runs, 5 RBI, 1 walk, 10 strike outs, 1 home runMike Carp – OF/1B
Mike Carp was showing promise, but that flash of potential seems to have disappeared. The Mariners were hoping he would be the future starting 1B, but his underwhelming performance may have cost him that role already.
Carp is not a wise choice for your team, no matter how deep the rosters are.
This week’s line: 3 for 21 (.142) with 2 runs, 1 RBI, 3 walks, 3 strike outs
