The Seattle Mariners went on a tear this week, sweeping the Tigers before they finally cooled off and lost 2 of 3 in Toronto. The team was 4-2 this week overall and looked good. Those 4 wins yielded 30 runs for the Mariners while they only scored 2 runs combined in their 2 losses.
Who’s Hot Michael Saunders – OF
Oh, the power of run support.
Yeah, I said it. Michael Saunders is hot again. Saunders went on a tear this week, apparently trying to keep his job as Mike Carp and Franklin Gutierrez are preparing to come back up to the team in the near future. Saunders doing well does not bode well for Casper Wells, though.
Saunders’ weekly numbers: 8 for 23 with 4 runs, 9 RBIs, 4 doubles, 2 home runs, and a stolen base.Alex Liddi – 3B/1B
Alex Liddi is a bit surprising. It was odd that he was called up with both Kyle Seager and Chone Figgins already in the lineup. After watching his recent play, though, it all makes sense. Liddi is swinging a hot bat right now and it would be just plain dumb to pull the kid.
We’ll see how things pan out when Carp and Guti come back. If he keeps swinging the bat well, he’s going to cause some problems for Mariners management.
Liddi’s weekly numbers: 12 for 21 with 3 runs, 3 RBIs, a home run and a stole base.Dustin Ackley – 2B
Dustin Ackley started off slow but has warmed up recently and is swinging well. How long it will last is beyond me, but enjoy it while it’s happening now. He is going to get the whole season to improve his numbers as he is not in any danger of being benched except for days off or illness.
Keep an eye on Jesus Montero. He's heating up
Ackley’s weekly numbers: 7 for 22 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs, and 3 doubles.Keep An Eye On Jesus Montero – C/DH
Like I said earlier in the year, Jesus Montero needs a little time. He already has more major league experience this season than he did with the Yankees and will need some adjustment period time. He is slowly warming up at the plate. If his bat gets hot and stays hot, he isn’t going anywhere.
He has also been doing well behind the plate. If Miguel Olivo doesn’t shape up, you could see the combination of Montero and John Jaso swapping Catcher and DH roles nightly.
Montero’s weekly numbers: 7 for 22 with 3 runs, 4 RBIs with a home run.Jason Vargas – SP
Jason Vargas was on my Who’s Hot list last week. This week he started off with a big win and ended the week with a disappointing loss, though it was not really his fault. Wins and losses do count over time, though. (Tell that to Felix Hernandez).
With run support, Vargas is brilliant and it shows. When there is no run support, his good stuff gets wasted and it looks ugly. (Tell that to Felix Hernandez, too!)
Vargas’ weekly numbers: 1 win, 1 loss, 12 innings pitched giving up 10 hits, 6 runs, 4 walks and striking out 5.Who’s Cold Justin Smoak – 1B
Justin Smoak continues to tank this week. I don’t know how much longer the team will allow him to keep a stagnant spot in the lineup, but it would be advantageous to not have him in your fantasy lineup.
Smoak’s weekly numbers: 2 for 16 with 3 runs (he walked once and scored), 3 RBI’s and a home runHector Noesi – SP
Hector Noesi has another shaky outing this week. He looked pretty good at the start, but has fizzled out since. He may struggle to keep his spot in the rotation when the Mariners decide to bring up Hultzen and Paxton at some point this year. Noesi and Millwood would be replaced in that scenario.
Noesi’s weekly numbers: no decision, 5 innings pitch, 5 hits, 4 runs 1 walk, 2 strike outs.
And as always…if you have Felix Hernandez and Ichiro Suzuki…don’t be dumb. Start them every chance you get.
