The Seattle Mariners were coming off a bad week, having finished up a nine-game stand by dropping five of their last six games including getting swept for the first time this season. It looked liked bad news was going to keep coming as the Mariners headed to the first place team in the A.L. Central, the Detroit Tigers. However, the Mariners responded by following up being swept by sweeping the Tigers in a three-game series. With the sweep, Seattle pulls back to .500 on the season at 10-10. The Mariners pulled into a tie in the A.L. West with A’s, trailing the red-hot Rangers by 5.5 games.
Good News: The road has been kind to Seattle this season. With the sweep at Detroit, the Mariners moved up to 7-4 on the road. Justin Smoak has been bothered by a hamstring lately that caused him to miss games, but he came back with a bang today hitting a 3-run homer in the first setting the tone in the Mariners 5-4 win. Smoak is leading the Mariners in home runs on the season. Dustin Ackley also had a solid series for Seattle going 5-for-14 including leading the offense in a 9-1 win on Wednesday going 3-for-6 with 3 RBI. The Mariners, who put up a season-high 21 runs for a three game series, also had a big offensive series from Alex Liddi. Liddi went 6-for-14 in the three game series with 2 HR, 3 RBI, and a SB. The top two Mariner starting pitchers, Jason Vargas and Felix Hernandez, both picked up wins in the series. Vargas moved to 3-1 with a 7-4 win Tuesday going 6 IP allowing 6 hits and 4 ER with 4 strike outs. Hernandez got his second win of the season cruising in a 9-1 win on Wednesday allowing 4 hits and 1 ER in 7 IP.
Bad News: What bad news? The Mariners offense clicked producing 21 runs after scoring 7 runs in getting swept by the White Sox. Hector Noesi did lose a 4-0 lead today faltering in the sixth inning. Noesi failed to retire a batter in the sixth inning, giving up a triple, single, and a home run, as it was tied 4-4 when Eric Wedge went to the bullpen. He did look better than his start last Friday when he didn’t escape the second inning against the White Sox, but his ERA on the season in still an eye-popping 8.83 through four starts.
On the Horizon: The ten game road trip continues tomorrow as the Mariners head to Canada to face the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto is 10-8 going into tonight’s game with Baltimore. The Blue Jays are coming off playing their last seven games on the road. They swept Kansas City four straight, but lost the last two to the Orioles. Blake Beavan hopes to shake the rough luck he has had as a Mariner starter so far this season. Beavan lost a 1-0 start, and he lost his last start as Philip Humber dealt a perfect game against him. Kevin Millwood will face former Mariner Brandon Morrow on Saturday, and Jason Vargas will look for his fourth win of the season on Sunday.
