Russell Martin, a good baseball player having a bad year, almost poisoned the Tigers earlier this week. Martin, the New York Yankees catcher, is hitting below .200 for the season—well below his career mark (going into this year) of .272. But despite his failure to get a hit rate of over 80 percent, Martin shot the hearts of Tigers fans into their throats on Tuesday night. It was the ninth inning, the Tigers clinging to a 6-4 lead, and closer Jose Valverde was having one of those ninth innings that all closers sometimes have—the kind where he leads the fans, like a demented pied piper, to the gates of Hell and back again. Valverde was as wobbly as a punch-drunk prize fighter. And even the weak-hitting Martin wasn’t an antidote. With runners on first and second and two outs, a run already in, Martin laced a Valverde fastball deep into the left-field corner. For sure, it was a double; the only question was: Would the hit score both runners and tie the game? Raul Ibanez scored easily fr...

Game 2012.116: Tigers at Twins

Detroit Tigers, 61-54, 2nd place, 2 back. Detroit had last night off, instead donning clown suits for a hilarious charity exhibition game. Brennan Boesch was a hit with his huge shoes and big floppy glove, and the performance was capped off by the always funny bit where the whole bullpen piles into a tiny car. Unfortunately, Brayan Villarreal probably shouldn’t have been taking...

Peralta gets latest tryout as Tigers' No. 5 hitter

The search for a fifth hitter in the Detroit Tigers batting order goes on. Jhonny Peralta hit fifth Tuesday night, for the second time this season, making it four different players to bat behind cleanup man Prince Fielder in as many games. Eight different players have been used in the fifth spot this season. Delmon Young was the guy through the first two-thirds of the season...

Eric Chavez: A Diamond Off The Bench

With Alex Rodriguez on the DL, Eric Chavez has filled the void by outshining the former star in front of him. When a key position player player goes down with an injury, it usually sends managers scrambling to fill the void immediately, so they seek help from their bench, farm system, or possible trades. Replacing a high caliber player isn’t always the easiest task and the same...

Yankees Game 115: Swisher Slams It

Texas Rangers 2 — New York Yankees 8   In a game of the top two offenses, Nick Swisher’s slam highlights a 8-2 win over the Texas Rangers.   David Phelps started in place of ace CC Sabathia and pitched a solid 5 innings in just his 4th start of the season. Against one of the best offenses in the game, Phelps gave up 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 3 and walking 1. His...

Yankees sign Lowe for bullpen

The Yankees signed Derek Lowe to a major league contract on Monday and said they planned to use the right-hander in the bullpen. Lowe, a 39-year-old sinkerballer, has spent time as a reliever, but mostly has pitched in the rotation for various teams, most recently the Indians. Cleveland designated him for assignment on Aug. 2 and released him on Friday. Lowe has a 4.01 ERA in 655...

Another Solid Start by Doug Fister Helps Halt Detroit Tigers’ Latest Losing Streak

Doug Fister, like Justin Verlander, is quickly becoming a stopper for the Detroit Tigers. Despite his defense letting him down in one inning, Fister went eight tough innings, pitching the Tigers to a 8-4 bounce back win against Minnesota. Following … Continue reading →

Yankees Sign Derek Lowe Amidst More Injuries To Beleaguered Pitching Staff

The New York Yankees are a very talented team. When you spend more money than anyone else on an annual basis, your team is generally going to be as talented as any other roster. Well, that is unless you are the Boston Red Sox. Clearly, spending as much as any other team does not always work. The Red Sox are living proof of that fact. But as good as the Yankees are once...

If Miguel Cabrera and Delmon Young Were Cats

I realize this is a semi-outdated (but, is it?) low blow that isn’t quite suited for a respectable blog. However, it is also hilarious. Happy Tuesday! Jeff

Yankees to Acquire Derek Lowe
