The Mariners had plenty of reason for hope looking forward after going 15-11 in July and following it up with a 15-12 August that had Seattle among the winningest second-half clubs in baseball. Much of that positive momentum seems to have evaporated in September, however, with the Mariners having fallen into some of the same patterns of April through June. Seattle is coming off getting swept at home against one contender, the Baltimore Orioles, and it faces another, the Texas Rangers, this weekend. The Mariners are 6-11 this month. They are 70-80 this season, and the hopes the club had for a strong finish that would get them to .500 have evaporated. Part of the problem is that the Mariners' competition is much better this month than it was in July and August. The club's final six series and seven of the final eight are against teams in the hunt for a playoff berth, and those opponents are putting a serious hurt on a Seattle team that just three weeks ago was thinking i...

Wedge defends Saunders' ill-fated steal attempt
Seattle Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders, who'd been at first base representing the tying run, was caught trying to steal second for the final out of the game in the bottom of the 11th inning Wednesday. Manager Eric Wedge could have been upset. He could have dressed down Saunders in private, or, worse, in front of the rest of the team. Wedge didn't choose either option...

The Hit-Maker and the Hit-Taker
Being a Mariners fan, I’m spoiled by the fact that I get to watch Brendan Ryan play defense almost every day. I’m anti-spoiled by the fact that I also have to watch Brendan Ryan play offense almost every day, but memories of watching Yuniesky Betancourt in the field are still fresh in my brain, and it’s difficult for me to imagine that there’s a better defensive shortstop...
O’s play 4.2 games in Seattle, gain 3-game sweep
The Orioles played two very 2012-Oriole-esque games to earn a sweep of the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. After taking game one in very non-Oriole fashion, 10-4, the next two games were much more their style.
In game two, the Birds trailed 2-0 for pretty much the entire game before scoring twice in the top of the ninth inning to tie it up. Neither team would score again until...
