Found May 18, 2012 on The Outside Corner:
There are three FANTASTIC looking series this weekend. First, we have the only intraleague matchup of the weekend between the first place Cardinals and the first place Dodgers. There's the Beltway Series, between the first place Orioles and second place Nationals. And then there is the series I've tabbed as this weekend's Series Spotlight, between the first place Braves and the second place Rays. Why did I choose this series? Well, I've featured the Orioles a good bit in the last couple of weeks, and the last time I featured the Cardinals, the Braves beat their brains in. Plus, I haven't featured the Rays for quite awhile, so I figured I was overdue to give them some love. The Braves have been cruising this season against top competition, sweeping the Cardinals in St Louis last weekend  to finish off a 7-2 road trip, and taking two out of three in LA against the Dodgers last month as part of a 5-2 west coast road trip. The Braves 14-8 road record is one of the b...

Heyward, Braves improving situational hitting

Jason Heyward smiles when he thinks back to one particular at-bat on Sunday. Its a memory he doesnt mind reliving. The Braves and Cardinals were scoreless when Heyward came to the plate in the third inning with the bases full of his teammates. There were two outs, so he expected St. Louis starter Lance Lynn to put the ball over the plate. I knew he had to come to me, Heyward said...

Rays' Shields dominant in interleague play

The Tampa Bay Rays' James Shields dominated opponents during interleague play last season. The same can't be said for Tommy Hanson, who hasn't experienced much recent success against AL clubs. With a chance to become the majors' first seven-game winner, Shields takes the hill opposite Hanson on Friday night when the Rays open a three-game set with the NL East-leading...

Heyward, Sophomore Slumps, and Old Friends

Understatement: Jason Heyward‘s 2011 season did not go quite as most of us expected. His (seemingly) long-awaited 2010 rookie campaign at age 20 mostly lived up to the hype, but he followed up with stereotypical “sophomore slump” season that was marred by nagging injuries, benchings, but most of all, poor hitting (relative to expectations, at least). Now 22, Heyward is so far...

Rays start interleague play vs. streaking Braves

ST. PETERSBURG In one respect, the Tampa Bay Rays have history on their side as they begin interleague play tonight with a weekend series against the Atlanta Braves. They went 12-6 last season playing against National League teams, ranking as third best in the majors and third best in franchise history. And while the franchise is only 118-132 against the NL, under manager Joe Maddon...

Hanson strong, Jones hurt as Braves top Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Tommy Hanson pitched seven effective innings, Freddie Freeman drove in two runs and the Atlanta Braves beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Friday night. Hanson (5-3) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. Freeman had a run-scoring double and Brian McCann hit an RBI single that put the Braves up 4-2 in the fifth. Chipper Jones left after seven innings...

Marlins can't solve Beachy, lose to Braves

ATLANTA (AP) -- Brandon Beachy improved his major-league best ERA with a couple of career milestones and the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 7-0 Thursday night. Beachy (5-1) threw a five-hit shutout, the first of his career, in the first complete game of his career. He has won five straight decisions since losing his first start. Beachy had no walks and six strikeouts and...

Braves Unveil the Best Bobblehead of this Season

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1992 NL Championship Series between the Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates—and the last time the Pirates were in the playoffs—the Braves are going to be giving out a special bobblehead on June 9th to the first 20,000 fans in attendance. Entitled "The Slide," the bobblehead features Sid Bream sliding into home, past Pittsburgh...

Beachy is Peachy

BEACH BOY: Brandon Beachy has baseball's best ERA thus far in 2012. In less than four years he has gone from an undrafted college infielder in 2008 from Indiana Wesleyan to the pitcher with the best ERA in baseball.  After this week’s shutout of the Marlins, Brandon Beachy lowered his already microscopic ERA to 1.33.  Beachy is only the third player in Braves’ history with...

Rays 5, Braves 2

Alex Cobb won his first start of the season, Matt Joyce hit a grand slam and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Atlanta Braves 5-2 on Saturday. Cobb (1-0) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. He retired his last 10 batters. Cobb was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Friday night to take the place of Jeff Niemann, who is on the 60-day disabled list with an injured right leg....

Beachy looking to cool Marlins' hot bats

After struggling mightily in April, Miami's offense is clicking and the Marlins are piling up wins. Their suddenly potent lineup will be put to the test in Thursday night's two-game series finale against the Atlanta Braves, who will give the ball to major league ERA leader Brandon Beachy. With Wednesday's 8-4 victory over the Braves, Miami (20-17) improved to 12-3 in...

Recap: Ross drives in four to lead Sox past Rays 5-3.

Cody Ross likes to make up for his mistakes rather quick. A day after losing a pop up in the sky that gave the Rays the winning run, the Sox outfielder gets a two out RBI single in the eighth which would be the difference in a 5-3 win. Ross had himself a great night as he had Rays starter Matt Moore work hard tonight.  Moore walked Ross with the bases loaded in the first and...
