Today at Safeco Field in Seattle, the annual Hutch Award is going to be given out to the MLB player who best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire of the legendary leader, Fred Hutchinson. The past two winners have been Billy Butler of the Royals (2011), and Tim Hudson of the Braves in 2010. You ask, why is this important to San Francisco Giants fans? Giants pitcher Barry Zito has been selected as the winner of the award. Zito is being recognized for everything he’s done on and off the field from his days with the Oakland Athletics and as recent as outdueling Justin Verlander in Game 1 on the World Series for the Giants. His off the field achievements are just as impressive. Which, is another reason why they’ve selected Zito as the 48th annual award winner.
