The regular season is slowly coming to an end, and the final home game of the regular season was played today at AT&T Park for the San Francisco Giants.   Pitcher Barry Zito picked up his 14th win of the season, and the Giants have now won the last 10 Zito starts. I would say he’s going to be the number 4 starter in the playoffs, with Ryan Vogelsong being ready to come out the pen if any starters have early troubles. Buster Posey has taken the lead in the NL Batting Title race. Posey racked up 2 hits today to bring his average up to .333, and Andrew McCutchen had an 0-for-4 day to bring his average down to .332. Infielder Marco Scutaro has extended his hitting streak to 15 games, after hitting a homer in the 2nd inning. Hunter Pence also hit a homer in today’s game, and is 2 RBI shy of the 100 mark on the season. Posey reached 100 RBI in last nights ball game. D-backs look to take rubber match from Giants

After being left off the postseason roster for the San Francisco Giants' 2010 World Series run, Barry Zito will be included on this year's playoff team. Bruce Bochy has yet to announce his postseason rotation, but if Zito continues to pitch like he has over the past few weeks, a playoff start seems probable. In the Giants' final home game before the NL division series...

Giants Wilson says he's ahead of schedule in rehab

San Francisco Giants right-hander Brian Wilson is scheduled to throw Oct. 19 for the first time since Tommy John surgery, and the always-confident closer insists he will be full strength by spring training. Wilson, the 2010 major league saves leader with 48, spent his third day on the field Thursday doing agility drills and light baseball work stopping balls rolled his way. He...

Melky Cabrera Won't Play in Postseason Once He Finishes Suspension, Giants Decide

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants have no plans to bring back suspended outfielder Melky Cabrera for the postseason if the club is still playing when he is eligible to return. Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that he and general manager Brian Sabean are meeting to finalize their 25-man roster for the best-of-five division series. Cabrera would be allowed to play in the NLCS...

These Saber-Savvy San Francisco Giants

The Giants? They’re just a bunch of stat geeks. Look at some of the aspects of their play on the field, and it’s clear that this is not a club that sticks only with tradition. Talk to Bobby Evans, Vice President of Baseball Operations, and you get a sense of a team with a strong process that includes inputs from both the old and the new school of baseball. And this isn’t some...

MLB Rumors: No-Brainer For Giants To Leave Melky Cabrera Off 2012 Playoff Roster

The San Francisco Giants have already clinched the National League West division in 2012, signaling that they are going back to the postseason after taking one year off from the Major League Baseball Playoffs. Clinching the division instead of a wild card berth guarantees they will play more than just one game. And if they go past the first round and play more than five...

Posey, Molina look to make National League history

Pop quiz time. Who was the last National League catcher to win the MVP award? Mike Piazza? Gary Carter? Nope....you have to go all the way back to 1972 when Johnny Bench won his second award in three seasons. And how about the last National League catcher to win the batting title? Get Piazza's name out of your head, everyone, you have to go all the way back before World War II...

San Francisco Giants Comfortable Without Melky Cabrera in the Play-Offs

Obviously Melky Cabrera is not injured.  The whole world knows where he is.  He failed a drug test with elevated levels of testosterone, created a fake website to try to hide his drug usage, and was ultimately suspended by Major League Baseball for 50 games.  While he is not injured, his suspension has acted much like a trip to the disabled list.  The Giants have had...

Giants 7, Diamondbacks 3

Midseason acquisitions Hunter Pence and Marco Scutaro each hit two-run homers in the second inning to back Barry Zito, and the NL West champion San Francisco Giants beat Arizona 7-3 Thursday in their regular-season home finale. Zito (14-8) won his fourth straight start and sixth consecutive decision since a loss Aug. 2. The 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner with Oakland has his most...

Bringing Back The Melk

There are more than a few national writers who have been self-righteous about never wanting to see Melky Cabrera anywhere ever again. There’s been at least one local writer who’s criticized the Giants for not letting Melky come back. They are both right.  And that’s why this is such an uncomfortable issue. The Giants have to make this stand for baseball reasons, because otherwise...

Corbin hit hard early in D-backs' loss to Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Midseason acquisitions Hunter Pence and Marco Scutaro each hit two-run homers in the second inning to back Barry Zito, and the NL West champion San Francisco Giants beat Arizona 7-3 Thursday in their regular-season home finale. Cain pitches, hits Giants past Diamondbacks

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Matt Cain pitched seven innings and had two hits and an RBI to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 6-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. Brandon Belt added three hits, Pablo Sandoval singled twice and drove in two runs, and Marco Scutaro extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games while helping Cain to his career-best 16th win. It...

#MVPosey

This is going to be one of those years when so much attention is paid to one awards race (the American League MVP, of course), we kind of forget there are other things going on. It’s too bad, because I think the National League race is a lot more interesting. The AL race is one we’ve been through before, almost every year lately -- sabermetrics guys vs. old-school guys, narrative...

Buster Posey Injury: Giants' Catcher Hit in the Throat

Buster Posey may have lost his voice, but he won't lose playing time.  The San Francisco Giants catcher was hit in the throat by a pitch that battery-mate Ryan Vogelsong bounced in the dirt last night. Posey remained in the game and says he will play today. The incident happened in the second inning of last night's game against the San Diego Padres and was a scary...

MLB: A Look at the NL MVP Race

There is just days left of the MLB season, and time is dwindling down. It’s writers and baseball fan’s favorite time of year. The playoffs are on the horizon and the award races are heating up. The National League Most Valuable Player award was once all but 0n Andrew McCutchen’s mantle. But since August, McCutchen and the Pittsburgh Pirates have cooled off, and now the...
