The Mets have signed free agent starting pitcher Shaun Marcum to a one-year major league deal with the Mets for $4 million dollars. However, the total deal could be worth $8 million if Marcum earns another $4 million in incentives, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Marcum, 31, went 7-4 with a 3.70 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 109 strikeouts in 124 innings. He made only 21 starts as a lingering elbow issue hampered him a bit. In 2011, Marcum went 13-7 with a 3.54 ERA as the Brewers went on to win the NL Central. He is 57-36 with a 3.76 ERA in seven seasons with the Blue Jays and Brewers. The 31-year-old missed approximately two months due to elbow tightness in 2012 and his average fastball velocity remained well below 90 mph at 86.5 mph according to MLBTR. The rotation appears to be set now and will likely look like this: Johan Santana Shaun Marcum Jon Niese Dillon Gee Matt Harvey That should be the norm at least until prospect Zack Wheeler arrives.

Marcum signs with Mets

Photo by Michael BaronIt's being reported that the Mets have signed Shaun Marcum to a one year, not only did this come out of nowhere but with all the Bourne discussion it's barely been noticed.  It was reported earlier this off-season that the Mets were interested in Marcum but never was it characterized that they were front runners or even close. With Marcum the Mets now...

Mets Take a Chance on Shaun Marcum

When...

From Left Field: Mets Finally Sign A Free Agent

With the announcement this morning that the Mets have agreed to sign Shaun Marcum, the offseason drought is officially over. The Mets were the only team in the game to have not signed a Major League free agent before the Marcum deal. Of course, the Mets are going through a rebuilding phase, but the team didn’t even sign a bench player or relief pitcher to a pro deal. What this...

Mets Grab Themselves a Cheap Shaun Marcum

We begin with a Shaun Marcum timeline. Marcum debuted in the majors in 2005, and he got progressively better through 2008. He missed all of 2009 due to Tommy John surgery. In 2010, as a Blue Jay, he started on opening day. Following 2010, he was traded to the Brewers for top prospect Brett Lawrie straight up. In 2011, he posted a sub-4 ERA over 33 starts. In 2012, he posted a sub...

With Marcum signed will Collin McHugh fit best in the bullpen?

As of a week ago it looked as though Mets fans were going to see an open battle between Collin McHugh, Jenrry Mejia, and Jeremy Hefner for the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Since the Mets just signed right-hander Shaun Marcum to a one-year deal, it seems as though that void has been filled. Although the rotation is all squared away, another main pitching hole remains in the...
