Philadelphia Phillies Manger Charlie Manuel

Now that the ride is over and the trade deadline has passed, many of us will watch the remainder of the season thinking about 2013. Ruben Amaro has said more will be done and this might not be limited to just players. Yes, is it time for a manager change? I am not a believer that Charlie Manuel is to blame for the horror that has been the 2012 season. The idea of replacing Manuel might be difficult to consider for some especially if you consider five division titles, two National League Pennants and a World Series. But this is not about the past, this is about 2013 and beyond.

Moving into 2013 the Phillies will most likely have their core group of Howard, Utley, Rollins, Ruiz, Hamels, Halladay and Paplebon, (Lee?), outside of a blockbuster move. The remaining roster will be ufilled with undoubtedly youth and this is where the “player’s manager” Manuel might no longer fit into the puzzle.

The Phillies who are in cost cutting mode are showing their hand as far as what they might be willing to spend next year. Lower salaries mean younger players and if this is the direction the Phillies plan to go they will need a manager who stresses discipline, one thing the current Phillies lack. Is Manuel’s style to blame for the current cores overall lack of plate discipline? It is difficult to say that it’s not, looking at the stats of the core.

The Phillies under Manuel have had a great run and also a run that fell short. The Phillies struggles at the plate certainly caused them to lose one World Series and another appearance. Looking to 2013 we must look to the past and learn from the winning and losing. The Phillies had a ton of natural talent that Manuel did not always get the most out of. Without that same level of talent can the Phillies afford not to get 100% from the new, younger players? Unless Manuel can change his approach to managing, it might be time for a change.Similar Posts:
