Ryan Madson, Philadelphia Phillies closer will rejoin the team tonight after a stint on the DL.There has been some talk about the Phillies possibly looking to the past to help their future hopes of returning to the playoffs. In particular, some folks have begun to speculate whether bringing former Phillies pitcher Ryan Madson back to town could be an option. There can hardly be an argument against bolstering the Phillies bullpen for 2013. If not for the bullpen this year, the Phillies streak of postseason appearances may be alive and well. Unexpected injuries and relying too heavily on inexperienced arms proved to be the undoing for the bullpen and quite possibly the Phillies season. So the question of the day is: Would it benefit the Phillies to entertain re-signing former setup man/closer Ryan Madson?Madson did an amazing job for the Phillies while pitching in the setup role. Ryan Madson’s abilities were never questioned in Philadelphia. The question was whether Madson had accumulated enough of a track record to earn the kind of money that major league closers earn (aka $44 million over 4 years). Though the story has never been told in full, I believe the Phillies had questions about relying on Madson as a closer, and decided for a little extra jing, they could have one of the best closers in baseball. So they signed Jonathan Papelbon.Ryan Madson went on to sign a 1 year deal with the Cincinnati Reds, and wound up injured before he threw a meaningful pitch for them. Madson had to have Tommy John surgery, leaving his future a bit cloudy. If Madson proves that he can still pitch with the same effectiveness, bringing him back to Philadelphia at a discounted rate to help stabilize the bullpen would be a no-brainer. The problem may be whether the bad blood left from his last contract negotiation would still linger and be enough to prevent Madson from signing in Philly.Similar Posts:Hamels Dominates Again, Notches 14th WinHoward powers late Phillies rally to keep playoff hopes aliveKendrick throws shutout, he owes it all to Charlie ManuelPhillies Odds and Ends – Cliff Lee’s Winning Streak, Cautious with Chooch, Darin Ruf and September Call UpsPhillies sweep Nationals, Lee gets first home win, a run at a Wild-Card?
