Andrelton Simmons continues to amaze with his athleticism and fielding skills A great game at the plate for Andrelton Simmons ended even better as his walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th scored Dan Uggla from 2nd base and gave the Braves a 5-4 victory over the Pirates on Tuesday night. The Pirates jumped on the Braves early as Gabby Sanchez homered to center.  Andrew McCutchen added 2 more runs to the Pirates lead with a double down the left field line in the 3rd inning. The Braves did get 2 of those runs back in the bottom of the third, when Freddie Freeman reached out for a ball and drove it past the 3rd baseman, Alvarez. In the next half inning, Pedro Alvarez, hit a solo shot off of his former Vanderbilt teammate, Mike Minor, that padded the Pirates lead to 4-2.  Minor, as well as the Atlanta bullpen, shut down the Pirates the rest of the way.  At one point, the Atlanta staff had set down 12 straight, until McCutchen’s single in the top of the 9th. After a 2 out single by Dan Uggla in the 6th, B.J. Upton continued his strong home stand with a 2-run blast that tied the game up at 4-4. Kimbrel allowed 2 runners to reach in the 9th before shutting down the Pirates. Dan Uggla started off the 10th with a walk. After a B.J. Upton fly out, Reed Johnson was hit with a pitch  by Pirates reliever M. Melancon.   Andrelton Simmons then doubled to right center to bring in Uggla for the Braves walk-off victory.   Simmons finished the game 3-5 at the plate. Jason Heyward and Dan Uggla both continued their push to get out of slumps.   Uggla was 2-3 and scored twice.  His patience at the plate was a key to the Braves victory.   Heyward finished 2-4 with a double. The Braves got the win, but left 11 runners on base during the game.  That is something they will have to improve on. Mike Minor had another solid outing for the Braves.  He finished with 6IP, 5 K’s, and only 2 of the runs he gave up were earned.  Anthony Varvaro got the victory after pitching a scoreless 10th inning. The Nationals had a come from behind victory against the Mets.  That keeps the Braves lead in the NL East at 7 games. The Legend of El Oso Blanco and the Best of Evan Gattis Facts

El Oso Blanco aka Evan Gattis is a 26-year-old rookie catcher for the Atlanta Braves who has already been named NL Rookie of the Month twice this season.  If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t seen his highlights, Gattis is an absolute beast.  The guy doesn’t wear batting gloves and mashes home runs like he’s got a personal vendetta against the baseball.  The...

Kris Medlen Rides Placid Waters

Atlanta Braves starter Kris Medlen was relaxed and upbeat after he garnered his second win of the season Monday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-2.  But nothing new there, win or lose, Medlen’s demeanor is always about the same. The pitcher who has been compared to Greg Maddux on the field, rides the same placid waters as the mellow Maddux did when off the field. Last season...

Three Cuts: Teheran, Gattis help Braves sweep Bucs

ATLANTA Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 5-0 victory over the Pirates (35-25), clinching a midweek series sweep at Turner Field. 1. Julio Teheran was a harmless Brandon Inge single from baseball immortality (for one day, at least) As a general rule, I don't publicly acknowledge no-hitters or the possibility of a no-no until one out in the eighth inning...

Braves 7, Pirates 2

The Braves blasted their way past the Bucs to take game one of this week’s series in Atlanta, as A.J. Burnett suffered through his worst start of the season. It was clear early on that Burnett wasn’t happy with home plate ump Dan Iassogna’s strike zone (it definitely did appear to be tight), and he walked three hitters in the first four innings. The third walk was to Freddie...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves – Game 58

What a win yesterday.  You could almost see that Garrett Jones homer coming after he struck out earlier in the game with men on.  I’m pretty sure two people could have caught that ball.  He had to have split it in half. Right back at it though, a plane ride to Atlanta and the grind…
