Outfielder Pat Burrell will retire from baseball next month as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, the team announced Thursday. Burrell, who was selected by the Phillies with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1998 draft, will sign a one-day contract, allowing him to retire as a member of the ballclub whose uniform he donned for nine seasons. He will be honored in Philadelphia on May 19 by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Citizens Bank Park before the Phillies take on the Boston Red Sox. The 35-year-old slugger ranks fourth in Phillies history with 251 home runs, eighth with 827 RBI and ninth with 518 extra-base hits. He left Philadelphia in 2008 after helping the Phillies win their first World Series title in 28 years. Burrell went on to play the next three seasons with Tampa Bay and San Francisco, winning a second World Series with the Giants in 2010.
