Finally something for the home crowd to celebrate. Justin Smoak hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning and Raul Ibanez hit a crucial home run for the second night in a row as the Mariners edged the Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Friday to snap a six-game losing streak at Safeco Field. Seattle was swept in its last homestand but started another in exciting fashion after blowing a lead earlier in the eighth. The rally began when Kyle Seager hit a ball to deep left-center field that popped out of the glove of a sprinting Desmond Jennings for a two-base error. Kendrys Morales followed with a walk setting up the big hit that would come one out later. Smoak crushed a line drive to right field off Rays relief pitcher Joel Peralta (2-6) that just eluded the diving effort of Wil Myers scoring Seager and pinch-runner Abraham Almonte. “Those are the difference in those games” said manager Eric Wedge. “We’re in pretty much every game. You look at our losses this year and how many tough ...

Paxton, Mariners keep Rays sliding with 6-2 win

James Paxton woke up Saturday morning to a text message from his father and the news that his grandfather, Lawrie, had unexpectedly passed away. Suddenly Paxton's first major league start for the Seattle Mariners took on more personal meaning. ''That wasn't easy. A very close family and he was kind of the glue,'' Paxton said. ''So it was great my...

Felix Hernandez’s start pushed back; Innings taking toll?

Seattle Mariners cornerstone Felix Hernandez has had his next scheduled start pushed back to Wednesday – when they host the Houston Astros. His start has been pushed back in result of the club being precautionary in hoping that the back cramps that the King is currently dealing with subsides. Hernandez was suffering back cramps previously during his Labor Day start at the Kansas...

Mariners give up 5-run lead, lose to Royals in 13

The Seattle Mariners had a five-run lead and Joe Saunders on the mound in the fifth inning. That should have been enough, but the Kansas City Royals battled back and won 7-6 on Mike Moustakas' home run to lead off the 13th inning. Saunders, 4-0 with a 2.81 ERA in seven career starts against the Royals coming in, could not make it through the fifth inning. Saunders gave up...

Looking Ahead: Rays at Seattle Mariners

Home Stretch As I mentioned previously in a post about whether or not the Seattle Mariners should shut down Hisashi Iwakuma and Felix Hernandez, the 2013 season for the club is once again coming to a disappointing end. While July had many believing the Mariners could finally eclipse that elusive .500 mark at the end of the year, a brutal August brought the club and its fans back...
