Found March 20, 2012 on Bronx Baseball Daily:

Yesterday was an off-day in the Yankees big league camp so Chad Jennings of the Journal News headed over to the minor league complex yesterday and gave us a solid update. Here are some of the highlights.

  • Tyler Austin will play right field, not 1st or 3rd base like last year, for Staten Island this year.
  • Mason Williams and Gary Sanchez are practicing with Tampa and J.R. Murphy with Trenton. However it is likely that Murphy starts in Tampa while the other two start in Charleston.
  • Dante Bichette will probably skip Staten Island and head to Charleston to start the season.
  • Rob Segedin is being transitioned from third base to right field. He’ll probably start in Tampa.
  • Ravel Santana has “came back unbelievably fast” from a bad ankle injury and is expected to start in Staten Island.
  • Former 1st round pick Slade Heathcott is out with a shoulder injury and isn’t expected back until June at the earliest.
  • Greg Bird will open the season in extended spring training. For now the Yankees are sticking with him as a catcher.
  • Jeremy Bleich is still recovering from shoulder surgery. He’s throwing bullpens after missing most of the past two seasons.

Jennings also listed the levels each minor leaguer is starting at in spring training. Those shouldn’t be considered rosters though as they will promote and demote guys based on spring training performances. Changes will also be made once more guys start leaving the big league camps.

Freddy Garcia’s reaction to Pettitte’s return is worrisome

A lot of Yankees and their fans were thrilled last week when the news was broke that Andy Pettitte was returning to the Bronx this year. However, not everybody is thrilled. For one, some of the prospects on the farm can’t be too happy having another veteran blocking their progress. And then there is Freddy Garcia… Via Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com: And asked his opinion...

Zoilo Almonte and the future of right field in the Bronx

There is a lot to like about Zoilo Almonte. He has excellent tools, including solid speed, developing solid power, and very good arm. Zoilo has had an interesting pattern of moving through the minors since 2010. I have followed him since the beginning of 2010, when he began to break out in a major way. Starting in Charleston, he got off to a slow start in 2010, but then caught...

Not Feeling the Pettitte Signing

I love Andy as much as the next guy. It's been an absolute pleasure watching him come up thru the system and becoming one of the faces of the franchise. In his prime, I felt nothing but confidence when Pettitte was on the mound. That was then & this is now. This is the year 2012, he is turning 41 years old in June, and he has not pitched in the big leagues in over a...

Yankees injury news: Jeter, Robertson, and Garcia on the mend

Here is a quick update on a few of the injured Yankees via Chad Jennings of the Journal News: Derek Jeter has been out since last Friday with a sore calf and is targeting this Friday as his return date. David Robertson is set to throw batting practice on Friday and will probably pitch in a game over the weekend or early next week. Freddy Garcia (hand) will pitch on Saturday...

X-rays come back negative after Cano hit by pitch

Robinson Cano was hit on the left hand by a pitch on Sunday and left the game in a lot of pain. He was sent for x-rays after the game and luckily they came back negative, according to Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News. Even though the x-rays are negative doesn’t mean Cano is out of the woods. He will be reevaluated on Tuesday, but could miss a few days. Eduardo Nunez similarly...

Yankees sent Swisher in form MRI on hamstring

Nick Swisher hasn’t been playing in spring training since the middle of last week because of a sore hamstring. He said at the time that they were just being cautious and that he would have played had it been the regular season, but the Yankees were worried enough to send him for an MRI over the weekend, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “I think they’re just being cautious...

Yankees injury news: Nunez is back and the rest

Eduardo Nunez has been out for about two weeks after getting hit on the hand with a pitch, but he took BP and infield practice, declared himself ready, and then actually played in a game over the weekend (link). It’s good timing for the Yankees because if he had another setback it very well could have put him in jeopardy of being ready to start the season. Chad Jennings of...

Rumor: Jorge Vazquez wants Yankees to call him up or trade him

The Yankees signed infielder Jorge Vazquez out of the Mexican League before the 2009 season and after three years and a season where he hit 32 home runs, he either wants to be called up to the majors or traded, according to Fernando Ballesteros of Puro Beisbol. In the article, translated from spanish, the president of the Mexican League’s Tigres de Quintana Roo said, ”If...

In the post-George Steinbrenner era, Yanks evolve

Even in the parking lot of their spring training complex, the changes around the New York Yankees since the death of George Steinbrenner are evident. Power-washers that kept the area as clean as a hospital no longer are out at 8 a.m. every single morning at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. Garbage cans are not emptied obsessively. Many workers report on time, not early. Will the...

Yankees' Decision to Bring Back Andy Pettitte Could Open Doors for Even More Surprising Returns

The Yankees dropped a Bronx bombshell last week when they announced that they had talked Andy Pettitte out of retirement, signing the veteran left-hander to a minor-league deal. The 39-year-old is hoping to make his return to the Yankee Stadium mound by May, and if he's successful in his return, what's to stop the Yankees from continuing their efforts to further turn back the clock?

Girardi says no, no, no to 6-man rotation

Over the winter a reporter asked Yankees manager Joe Girardi if he would consider going with a six-man rotation this season and he said no. But that was back in the days where A.J. Burnett would have been one of the six men. Now that it is Andy Pettitte in the fold has Girardi changed his mind? “I should not say never, but no, no, no,” Girardi told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com of...

Yankees didn’t have the budget for Mike Gonzalez

The Yankees were supposedly at budget before signing Andy Pettitte out of retirement last week. In fact, after signing Hiroki Kuroda there were rumors that they might not even have enough to sign both Eric Chavez and Raul Ibanez (obviously they did). So what happened in the case of Pettitte? They made an exception. As Brian Cashman put it, when a pitcher like Pettitte is available...

Yankees Spring Training Game 18: Offensive Eruption

Pittsburgh Pirates 3 — New York Yankees 10   In a 5-run 4th inning, the Yankees batted around to make the lead insurmountable in tonight’s 10-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.   Alex Rodriguez drove in one run in the 3rd inning and a two-run single in the big 4th inning. Curtis Granderson supplied runs [...]

Yankees 5, Rays 2

Phil Hughes allowed only three hits - one, a two-run homer by Matt Jocye - in five innings, and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 Wednesday. After walking Carlos Pena to lead off the bottom of the second inning, Joyce cranked a first-pitch cutter to dead center field for his third homer of the spring. But that was all the offense Tampa Bay could muster. Hughes, who...

AROD Wants to Exchange his Women's Clothing

Back on February 15th the ever socialy akward Alex Rodriguez rolled into Blue & Cream in New York City with his 20-year-old niece Michelle Silva and his girlfriend former WWE Diva Torrie Wilson.  Torrie and Michelle rang up a $17,600 bill (which is like $7 to you & I).  AROD paid using American Express Black card.  As The Mugs favorite paper the New York Post reported...
