After just one start, Padres right-handed starter Tim Stauffer went back on the 15-day disabled list Friday with recurring soreness in the flexor tendon bundle in his right elbow.

It is the same injury that put Stauffer on the disabled list just before Opening Day and forced him to miss his last two starts of the 2011 season.

The recurring theme seems to be that shortly after Stauffer starts to stress the injury, the pain returns. He had an MRI Friday morning.

"I don't know the reasoning, but it's the same sensation I felt at the end of spring training," Stauffer said Friday afternoon of the pain he started to experience near the end of last Monday's start in Washington, D.C.

That was his first start of the season and he had been on the disabled list through the season's first 34 games. When the pain didn't go away over the next few days, the Padres elected to return Stauffer to the disabled list.

Stauffer said he felt the problem arise again last Monday at the end of his 2011 debut. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks in five innings. He threw 91 pitches.

"When I came out of the game," it was sore and weak," Stauffer said of his elbow. "It didn't go away the next couple of days. Maybe it was the pitch count. I don't know."
