PLAYERS: Alfonso Soriano
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs

Alfonso Soriano has been known to be a streaky hitter throughout his career. Generally he starts the season slumping up the hoo-hah, which leaves fans disgruntled and wanting the 37 year old to retire. But when the weather heats up, his bat does as well. Just look at last season. He didn’t hit a home run until the month of May, and ended up with 32 of them by season’s end. Alfonso Soriano watches his home run against the Chicago White Sox on Monday. (Photo Credit: David Banks/Getty Images) The Chicago Cubs are on a four game win streak, and have won seven of their last ten games. It is no secret that Soriano’s hot streak has played a huge part in their recent success. In his last eleven games played, Soriano has a batting average of .400, hit 8 home runs, driven in 17 runs, and has an OPS of 1.439. In other words, he has been tearing it up big time. In last night’s 7-2 win against the Los Angeles Angels, Soriano went 2-3 with two solo dingers (the first one happening two pitches after Anthony Rizzo went deep). Monday night against their crosstown rivals, he dropped three hits (including a homer), scored four runs, and stole two bases! Yes, you read that last stat correctly. Alfonso Soriano is stealing bases once again. He has more stolen bases this year (10) than he had the last two years combined (8 total). His ten stolen bases are the most he has had in the first half of a season since his first year with the Cubs (13 first half swipes). He has double digit numbers in homers and stolen bases for the first time since 2008, when he hit 29 bombs and stole 19 bags. There is a somewhat realistic chance that Soriano could have a 20-20 season this year, which is something he hasn’t done since his 40-40 campaign with Washington in 2006. This is not the Alfonso Soriano that we have seen the last few years. This is the Soriano that the Cubs signed back in November of 2006. This is the Soriano who brought hope and excitement to the Chicago Cubs fan base. The Cubs play again tonight against the Angels looking for their fifth straight win. Tune into WGN at 7:05 to see if Soriano and the Cubs can keep up their success against the American League.

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-10-13

First, I'd like to apologize for the extreme lateness of the JOT today. Usually, I bang them out at work (I get here an hour early and write it). Today that didn't happen because I was very busy all day. It'll probably happen again tomorrow. Perhaps someday this will actually be my job, but I'm probably several years away from that happening, if ever.  Next, I'...

Cubs Trade Rumors: Potential Suitors for Five Players at Trade Deadline

The month of July continues to shape the upcoming trade deadline and the first week has been heavily favoring the Chicago Cubs. Chicago is in the midst of a four game winning streak but remain eight games under .500 and out of the playoff race in a super competitive NL Central. This combination implies the Cubs are still steadfast deadline sellers but its players are maximizing potential...

An agreement to install two new electronic signs at Wrigley Field has been reached between the Chicago Cubs and the city of Chicago. The Commission on Chicago Landmarks unanimously approved of the deal in a vote Thursday evening, making the signs one step closer to becoming reality. The proposed Jumbotron in left field would be 5,700 square feet in area, while the right field advertising...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-9-13

Iowa Cubs 0 @ New Orleans Zephyrs 9 Logan Watkins was cursed by Berselius yesterday. He went 0-4. Ty Wright had a double. Junior Lake struck out twice, but walked. He played RF. J.C. Boscan walked and struck out. Anthony Giansanti is pinch-hitting a lot, and he's good at it. He went 1-1 for the 4th time in a row. Jake Arrieta really sucked. In 3.2 innings, he allowed 10...

Chicago agrees to Wrigley Jumbotron

The Chicago Cubs have reached an agreement with the city that would allow the team to build a left-field Jumbotron at historic Wrigley Field while adding another sign in right field, the team announced Thursday. Chicago Cubs Agree With First Round Pick Kris Bryant

Third baseman Kris Bryant and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to terms on his first professional deal. As being reported by the Chicago Tribune, Bryan is to receive $6.7 million in signing bonuses. He brings a big, powerful stick to the Cubs organization and barring any uncorrectable flaws or injuries, he should have a solid career in the major leagues. Bryant was the #2 overall selection...

Cubs' Injury Update: Brian Bogusevic, David DeJesus, Scott Baker

Chicago Cubs center fielder Brian Bogusevic exited his team's July 4 game, but he could possibly play again on Thursday, July 11, as the Cubs begin a four-game series with their rivaled St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat. Bogusevic is the third Cubs center fielder to miss time due to injury, but at least he has so far avoided the...

Wrigley renovation clears hurdle

The Chicago Cubs' planned $500 million renovation of Wrigley Field has won the approval of another city commission and the support of the local alderman -- all but assuring the project will go forward. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday approved the proposal to renovate Wrigley and develop nearby property. The plan includes putting an...

Y U no spend $ on Cubs, Ricketts?!

I’m really kidding about that headline if you failed to read past that.  This is a wonderful story linked from DNAInfoChicago: Pearl Jam — the socially conscious rockers from Seattle who play at Wrigley Field July 19 — pledged to donate a portion of ticket sale revenue to the tiny after-school art program Ward founded on the Far Southeast Side 12 years ago. Plus, the Cubs —...

Matt Garza, Avisail Garcia Centerpieces for Jim Bowden ‘Blockbuster’ Trade Proposal

Chicago closer Kevin Gregg may be on the Detroit Tigers’ radar as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. But what about starter Matt Garza, who, like Gregg, will be a free agent after this season? ESPN’s Jim Bowden, formerly the GM for the Reds and Nationals, suggests a package deal that sends Garza and Gregg to the Tigers for Avisail Garcia, Rick Porcello and 2012 second-round...

Good night for being a Cubs fan

I should be in bed after getting home from tonight’s surprisingly easy Cubs victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, but I’m still on a bit of a high.  No matter the record, it’s always fun to go to the ball park and watch my favorite team, and it’s extra fun to watch them play well and win.  Yes, the Cubs are still far back in the division and wild-card races, and yes, they’re...

Preview: Kelly looks to hault Cubs recent success

While the St. Louis Cardinals sit atop the NL Central and the Chicago Cubs find themselves near the bottom, manager Dale Sveum's club isn't to be overlooked. The Cubs try to keep rolling Friday when they continue a four-game set against the visiting Cardinals, who could be without Matt Holliday. Fourth-place Chicago (41-49) has won five of six and 16 of 27 after taking...
