The Red Sox have 3 more games to play before they head home for the season.  The Sox hoped to come into Yankee Stadium and play spoiler against the Yankees and hopefully help the O's overtake the lead in the AL East pennant race.  Unfortunately, the Sox have been horrible at playing spoiler as the season is coming to an end.

Clay Buchholz took the mound for the Sox and didn't make it out of the 2nd inning.  Buchholz pitched a scoreless 1st inning, however he would find all kinds of trouble in the 2nd inning.  Buch gave up a lead off HR to Cano to give the Yanks an early lead.  Buchholz then gave up a single to Swisher, a 2 run HR to Granderson and then a HR to Martin.  Buchholz followed that with back to back walks to Chavez and Jeter.  The Yankees scored another run on a sac fly from ARod and then 2 more runs scored on an RBI double from Cano.  That would be it for Clay and Alfredo Aceves was on the mound in relief.  Aceves gave up a 2 run HR to Mark Teixeira and it seemed like this inning would never end.  Aceves finally got the final 2 outs to end the inning, but the damage had clearly been done.  Sox 0-9.

Aceves would stay in the game and pitch himself scoreless 3rd and 4th innings.  The Sox would finally get on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th inning when Daniel Nava hit a solo HR.  Sox 1-9.  Pedro Beato took the mound and pitched scoreless 5th and 6th innings.  The Sox would grab another run in the top of the 7th when Salty hit an RBI sac fly to score Gomez.  Sox 2-9.  Andrew Miller took the mound in the 7th.  While Miller allowed two hits in the inning, he didn't allow any of those base runners to score.  This season I have continuously been impressed with Miller out of the pen.  Andrew Bailey took the mound in the 8th in order to get some work since he hasn't been needed in a save situation in a while.   In typical closer fashion, Bailey gave up a run in a complete non-pressure situation.  Bailey gave up an RBI single to Melky Mesa to have the Sox down 2-10.  Bailey limited the damage to the one run and then it was off to the 9th inning.   As expected, the Sox bats were not able to rally in the 9th and score a bunch of runs, so the Sox fell to the Yanks in the first game of the series.

The Sox have two more games left to figure out how to play spoiler.

Red Sox 2 Yankees 10 BOXSCORE
