As time passes, the less likely it is that the Sox will not walk away from this deal. In fact, Tom Werner wants this thing done very soon. To fill roster spots that will be available as a result of the trade, the Sox will call up Jose Iglesias, and outfielder, Che-Hsuan Lin.
In anticipation of their megadeal with the Dodgers being finalized
today, the Red Sox have summoned shortstop Jose Iglesias and outfielder
Che-Hsuan Lin from Pawtucket to take two of the three roster spots that
will be opened when Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto are
officially traded to Los Angeles. (Carl Crawford, who is also going west
in the trade, is on the disabled list.)
"Hopefully this deal will go through [Saturday]. If it falls into place, the deal sheds us from
tens of millions of dollars of long-term commitments. It gets us great
prospects who will improve our major league roster as soon as next year.
It brings us a player in James Loney
who was 'untouchable' a couple of years ago. It allows us to start over
with free agents. We want to win for our fans and we now have huge
financial flexibility to improve the team."
This is still very surreal to me. Trading away a couple of first base prospects doesn't seem to bright now. Anyway, to the delight of many Ted's Army writers, we will see Jose Iglesias much sooner than expected. The third spot will be filled by Dodgers first baseman, James Loney.
As Aaron said earlier, get ready for a very interesting 6 months.

The sentiment for the 2012 Red Sox (and really, the end-of-2011 Red Sox as well) was never that this team lacked the pieces to win. From proven bats to fiery starters, Boston was loaded with talent, and it had young help waiting to come up, too. The problem throughout the much-maligned last September, creeping into this year and dragging the team down hard as the summer went on,...
Nick Punto was the first to tip his cap to Boston and its fans. Now Adrian Gonzalez is joining him. Punto and Gonzalez, two pieces of a giant trade that is also sending Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford to the Dodgers, both bid farewell to Boston on Saturday as reports swirled that their trade to the Dodgers had been completed and they were already flying to Los Angeles. Gonzalez tweeted...
Mauro Gomez has been called up three different times to the Boston Red Sox this year. In his first two stints, he hadn't hit a home run.
Well now in his third cup of coffee with the local nine, Gomez can now say that he has hit a home run in the big leagues as he hit a solo homer off Kansas City Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie in the 2nd inning of Saturday night's game....
It now rests in the hands of Red Sox upper management where two of their star players will ultimately end up. According to a report from ESPN ScoreCenter, both first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and pitcher Josh Beckett were claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving the Sox to either trade them, allow them to leave, or retain them. They are also apparently trying to shop...
The Sox almost blew it again, but they held for an ugly win on this time to set up a chance for a series win.
The Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after getting single runs in the 1st and 2nd, by way of a Ross single and Aviles double respectively. Doubront had a fairly easy time in until the 4th, when he was tagged for 4 runs. Doubront came out for a score-less 5th and that...
Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was ejected from Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals for arguing a call at first base.
Dustin Pedroia hit a grounder that Royals third baseman Tony Abreu bobbled before throwing to first. Replays showed that Pedroia beat the throw, but first base umpire Dan Bellino called him out.
Valentine was out of the dugout quickly, arguing...
While everyone was talking about the blockbuster trade and if and when it was going to happen, the Red Sox took the mound and actually ended their losing streak. Jon Lester took the mound for the Sox and there was the much needed return of David Ortiz.
Lester took the mound and hoped to build on his last few outings. Lester was given a couple of runs in the bottom of the...

BOSTON -- For the fifth time this season, Bobby Valentine was ejected. But unlike the other expulsions, this one was different. When first base umpire Dan Bellino tossed Valentine in the fifth inning of Sunday's 8-6 Red Sox win, the skipper walked off to a rousing standing ovation. Valentine believed Dustin Pedroia -- who was ruled out after hitting a hard grounder to Royals...
