Adversity Again an Antagonist

AN early injury to star outfielder, Curtis Granderson, will leave the Yankees missing his bat and speed to start the 2013 season. The 2013 baseball season is still very young, but it seems as though it’s starting off the same way it ended in 2012, in shambles. When Derek Jeter had to be helped off the field near the end of the Yankees playoff run last year, it perfectly summarized...

Weiner skeptical Yankees will cut spending

Count Michael Weiner among those skeptical of the New York Yankees' stated plan to reduce payroll next year. Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner says the team wants to get under the $189 million luxury tax threshold in 2014. That means the player payroll would have to be about $178 million at most, using average annual values of contracts, since the total for the...

Alex Rodriguez's foundation gave 1% of funds to charities in 2006

Here's another black eye for Alex Rodriguez (not that he needs another black mark on his ledger): in 2006, the A-Rod Family Foundation gave just 1% of donated funds to charities before they stopped submitting financial reports and were stripped of tax-exempt status. CBS New York has the details. Rodriguez and rapper Jay-Z raised $403,862 in a 2006 celebrity poker tournament...

Steinbrenners approve of A-Rod's portrayal in Yankees animated movie

While the New York Yankees played against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater Tuesday, the team's braintrust, Hal and Hank Steinbrenner took in an animated movie during an afternoon matinee. A-Rod’s Cousin Is Selling Replica World Series Ring. So What?

Spring training games are underway. The hot stove stories that kept us going all winter have been replaced by stories about non-roster invitees trying to make a major-league roster, behind-the-scenes looks at what your favorite player did over the winter, and columns drawing conclusions about spring statistics. And Alex Rodriguez stories. There are always A-Rod stories. So it was...

Top 10 combined seasons of fewest Mets & Yankees victories

Yesterday, we looked at the most combined wins in the same year for the Mets and Yankees so today we will look at the worst. No surprise that the 1960s are well represented but it might be a bit of a shock to you that 1962, when the Mets won only 40 games, did not produce the lowest win total. Only four years from outside the 60s make this list and none this century. Here are the...
