Recently, I have released my top 20 Cardinals prospects for 2013 at my site, cardinalsfarm.com. The Cardinals are in a good spot with these prospects in that many of them are probably going to contribute at the major league level this year. In the top 10, the Cards could see six make appearances in the majors this year (Michael Wacha, Kolten Wong, Shelby Miller, Trevor Rosenthal, Oscar Taveras, and Matt Adams) and 4 of those, Wong, Miller, Rosenthal, and Adams, could lose their rookie eligibility for 2014. To be considered a prospect, a player cannot exceed 130 at bats or 50 innings pitched in the major leagues. Next year's top 10 prospect list should look very different than this versions. Here are a couple of players who could make their way on next year's list Charlie Tilson Tilson, 20, was the Cardinals' 2nd round pick in 2011 out of New Trier High School in Illinois. Tilson is a huge wildcard to make this list because he missed all of 2012 due to shoulder...

Could the Cardinals lose their draft pick compensation for Kyle Lohse?

When the Cardinals made their qualifying offer to Kyle Lohse, they were counting on two things: (1) that Lohse and greedy agent Scott Boras would like turn it down and (2) as a result they would get a draft pick from the supplemental round (between the first and second rounds of the draft). However, that may no longer be the case. Any team who signs Lohse would lose their first...

Cardinals cut ties with infielder Ronny Cedeno.

In a move that is mildly surprising, the Cardinals released infielder Ronny Cedeno yesterday. Cedeno, who was brought in as a backup to Rafael Furcal, quickly became expendable when it was determined that Matt Carpenter could handle the second base job and Pete Kozma won the short stop job.  This allowed the Cardinals to use Daniel Descalso as their backup short stop and, with...

Shelby Miller outpitches Joe Kelly in latest battle for Cardinals 5th starter spot

Shelby Miller pitched brilliantly while Joe Kelly struggled in the latest battle for the Cardinals 5th starter spot. Miller, who started the game, pitched 4 innings and allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3.  Kelly, who came on in relief, lasted only 3 innings while giving up 8 hits and 4 runs. This is almost a carbon copy of last Thursday's performances where...

Wigginton Should Be Next Cut

The St. Louis Cardinals sent home one unproductive veteran player Tuesday in their latest round of cuts, and they need to do the same with another, even if it costs the team a relatively large amount of money. The Cardinals brought Ronny Cedeno in to spring training as an insurance policy at the shortstop position since Rafael Furcal did not recover from an elbow injury he suffered...

Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/19/13

On Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers once again faced their Jupiter, Fla. cohabitants, the Miami Marlins. The Fish swam over to the Birds’ side of the complex – except for those go-against-the-flow Peoria 2 soldiers, who marched over to the Miami fields. Memphis was the only one of the five Cardinals clubs to log a win. Springfield tied while the three Class-A clubs...

Kyle Lohse’s Lack of Suitors Shows Major League Baseball Needs to Amend Free Agent Compensation Rules

Achieving parity in sports is a constant balancing act, and the governing rules which (attempt t0) create such a level playing field are like a pendulum, swinging back and forth in either direction. That all being said, the pendulum governing Major League Baseball’s free agents has swung too far against the players, and with Kyle Lohse serving as a prime example, need to be amended...

Miller outpitches Kelly, Cards beat Marlins 5-4

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- St. Louis manager Mike Matheny wouldn't commit to naming a fifth starter even though the two pitchers in competition had decidedly different outings in the Cardinals' 5-4 victory over Miami. Starter Shelby Miller allowed only one hit and one walk in four scoreless innings while striking out three, retiring the last 11 batters he faced. Joe Kelly wasn...

Freese homers in return, Cardinals beat Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- David Freese homered in his first game in a week and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 3-2 Thursday. Freese had been out since March 14 with back stiffness stemming from a hard fall he took while chasing a foul ball. The 2011 World Series MVP hit a leadoff home run in the fourth and played five innings in the field. Mets infielder Justin...

Cardinals 3, Mets 2

Freese had been out since March 14 with back stiffness stemming from a hard fall he took while chasing a foul ball. Cardinals 5th starter job still up for grabs

All eyes will be on Shelby Miller and Joe Kelly today as they make their final (?) push for the 5th starter job. Miller will get the start with Kelly working in relief.  This is a flip from last Thursday alignment when Kelly started and Miller relieved. Although from all appearances Kelly should be in the lead, its interesting that the Cardinals keep delaying their decision....
