So far in 2013, St. Louis Cardinals' ace Adam Wainwright is showing that he is worth every penny of the five-year, $97.5 million general manager John Mozeliak gave him late this spring. Wainwright won again on Tuesday night, pitching into the ninth inning for the second time this year in the Cardinals' 2-0 win over the Washington Nationals.
Wainwright is now 4-1 on the young season and a big reason for a lot of his success has been his control. Coming into Tuesday's game with the Nationals, Wainwright had yet to issue a base on balls, but finally did so on Tuesdsay night when he walked Nationals' star Bryce Harper.
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Wainwright said he felt that walking Harper was the right move on Tuesday and was the type of walk that can actually benefit a pitcher rather than get him in trouble.
