St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte has seen a lot of ups and downs in the early stages of his career, but he might now be set to have many more ups than downs in the foreseeable future. The Cardinals agreed to a one-year, $1.95 million contract Wednesday with the man who closed out the franchise’s 11th World Series title. Although the deal is only for one year, Motte looks like he could be the ninth-inning man for the Cardinals for many years. Why? That might sound overly optimistic, but he could have long-term success because of his pitching style. Understandably, many people guffawed at Motte’s pitching style when he first came to the big leagues after being switched from catcher to pitcher in the minor leagues. He throws hard, but he doesn’t have much of a secondary pitch. His slider is very much still a work in progress, and he doesn’t really have a change-up (the out-pitch for many elite closers). However, all of those so-called deficiencies could turn out to be a blessing...

St. Louis Cardinals open virtual museum

As regular readers know, I have been a vocal critic of the St. Louis Cardinals for closing their museum back in 2008 and keeping it closed indefinitely. Since it may be some time (Phase 1 of Ballpark Village) until it re-opens, the club has invested in a virtual museum experience. The new website, www.cardinals.com/museum, has been launched today, January 30, with the goal of highlighting...

Cardinals' Rally Squirrel Gets Baseball Card, Upstaging Skip Schumaker Once Again (Photo)

Cardinals outfielder Skip Schumaker's connection to the Rally Squirrel in St. Louis is going to last forever. Or, at least as long as few small pieces of cardboard hold up. MLB.com points out that Schumaker's 2012 Topps baseball card will feature just his right foot. The rest of the card is reserved for one pesky squirrel who became a national celebrity during last year&...

First Bernie, Then Beltran

With Carlos Beltran leaving the Mets via trade and then signing with the Cardinals, there appears to be a lot of nostalgia going around about his career. In fact, it seems lately that Carlos Beltran and “Hall of Fame,” have been seen together in several discussions with Mets fans. Personally, I think the Hall of Fame is getting a bit too watered down. I love that a guy like Ron...

Roy Oswalt must deliver right answers to join Rangers

The team wonders about Roy Oswalt's commitment as it meets with the pitcher today.

Plan 9 from Kenmore Square

According to the latest rumors, Roy Oswalt is likely to end up in St. Louis. Edwin Jackson has "multiple" three-year offers, but may accept a one-year deal to see what his market is for next year. (Which puzzles me a bit, actually. Why not the bird in the hand?) The Sox are still mentioned as a possible one-year destination for Jackson. We're past plan B, and probably...

The Winter Warm Up Files: One Last Thing

The St. Louis Cardinals Winter Warm Up was two weeks ago, but the information that flows from that event covers the past, present, and future over what may be the most comprehensive weekend of the offseason. And its proximity to the start of Spring Training makes it kind of the unofficial straight-from-the-team preview for the season ahead. Photo Courtesy of Erika Lynn All of the...

MMO Fair or Foul: Is Beltran On His Way To The Hall Of Fame?

This edition of Fair or Foul features Brian Joura who does a fantastic job running Mets 360. Have you ever considered the possibility that Carlos Beltran has had a Hall of Fame career? Well, Brian builds a solid case for Tron, and if he’s right, going in while wearing a Mets cap seems like a no-brainer. Here is some of what he has to say and as always I encourage you to read...

Roy Oswalt and the Rangers

This post is quite a bit shorter than our normal fare here. We’re going to experiment with some quicker news analysis pieces for things that are still churning through the rumor mill. Don’t worry, these pieces won’t take the place of the more in-depth articles you’ve come to expect from the site. A few weeks ago, I talked about how Roy Oswalt could end up...

Source: Oswalt will meet with Rangers Monday

The Rangers are scheduled to meet with free agent right-handed starter Roy Oswalt on Monday, a source confirmed Sunday afternoon.

Oswalt not short on suitors for his services

Roy Oswalt has been in the top six in the National League Cy Young Award balloting six times. If you need a guy for Game 7 in a World Series, you could do a whole lot worse than the man from Mississippi.
