In Sunday’s 6-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners, Ichiro got plunked in the back of the knee in the fifth inning on a 2-2 pitch from Hishashi Iwakuma. It was the second time Mariner pitchers hit Ichiro in six games between them (Felix Hernandez hit him in the same game in Seattle that he hit Jeter and put A-Rod on the DL with a broken hand). So that’s twice Seattle pitchers hit Ichiro in six games, versus zero times in his last 335 games against everyone else. And Iwakuma’s pitch sure looked like it was intentionally aimed at Ichiro’s legs. Ryan and Ichiro: Tit for tat?Hmmm. Maybe Ichiro wasn’t everyone’s idol in Seattle. Matsui never liked him, either. On the other hand, what are Ichiro’s new teammates doing to stand up for their new guy, who has done nothing less than play flawless defense and deliver a hit in every game he has played as a Yankee. Well, by golly, they knocked Mariner shortstop Brandon Ryan (.204) out of the rest of the series. Wow. Good thing Don Zimmer didn’t hav...

All hail the King
This was originally going to be a piece about Eric Thames first home run as a Seattle Mariner, but since I couldn’t find any video coverage of it this late, I thought I’d go to the old stand-by, Felix Hernandez.
In one of his best outings in the bigs, King Felix went 9 innings strong in the Bronx, giving up two hits en route to a complete game shutout of the...
Brendan Ryan Playing His Way to Multi-Year Deal With Seattle Mariners
Everybody knows that Brendan Ryan can play shortstop. It seems like every game, Ryan makes the highlight reel with a remarkable play that saves a run or gets a pitcher out of a jam.
He has been the starting shortstop this year because of his glove. Ryan is now starting to hit and he’s becoming one of the best short stops in all of baseball.
Ryan started the year in a slump and...
Painting the Black: John Jaso and the Changes That Work by R.J. Anderson
We know that catchers are late to bloom and early to wither. We know this because of Nate Silver’s work on aging curves from nearly eight years ago. Part of the late peak, Silver proposed, stemmed from teams’ reluctance to play young catchers. Had Silver attempted to chart the perceived upside of a catcher, he would have done so in a scientific way. The chart below is decidedly...

Fantasy Baseball: Should You Be Looking at Hisashi Iwakuma?
Hisashi Iwakuma turned heads in his last start, striking out 13 batters en route to a 4-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. That’s three straight solid outings for the righty as he has gone 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP with 23 strikeouts in 19 innings against the Blue Jays, Yankees, and Rays.

His recent success has allowed Iwakuma to lower his ERA over...
Ichiro gets double against Mariners with help from the sun (Video)
New York Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki got credit for a double after hitting a pop fly ball that Seattle Mariners center fielder Michael Saunders lost in the sun during Sunday's game at Yankee Stadium.

It happened in the bottom of the seventh inning as Saunders tried to fight the sun to make the play, but the ball landed at his...
Mariners-Orioles Preview
Seattle's rotation has been among baseball's best of late, though the Mariners' sluggish offense didn't provide much in the team's latest series.
Facing another struggling lineup may help Jason Vargas achieve something no other Mariner has done in more than nine years.
Vargas looks to win his sixth consecutive start as Seattle visits the Baltimore Orioles in...
Mariners 1, Yankees 0
Felix Hernandez dominated the Yankees in their own ballpark again, pitching his third shutout of the season to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 1-0 win on a sunny, sticky Saturday afternoon.
Hernandez outpitched Hiroki Kuroda in a duel of pitchers who haven't lost since June. Mike Carp hit an RBI single in the second inning for Seattle, which bounced back from having its seven...
BP Unfiltered: Efficient Felix by Ben Lindbergh
On Saturday afternoon, Felix Hernandez shut out the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, allowing two hits and two walks and striking out six. That in itself is a very impressive achievement, given that the Yankees have scored the third-most runs per game in baseball this season, and also given that Yankee Stadium is not a particularly pleasant place to pitch. (The Yankees had averaged over...
The Quiet Performance Of Hiroki Kuroda
When Felix Hernandez throws a 1-0, complete game, two-hit shut-out, that is about all you’ll hear about from that game.
However, if you look at who threw against Hernandez you’ll find that Hiroki Kuroda held his own against the former Cy Young winner. Kuroda went 6 and 1/3 scattering 7 hits while giving up only 1 run. Kuroda walked just one Mariner while striking out four demonstrating...

Yankeetorial: We lost Saturday's game before it started
This is what we know. Ellen Degeneres will never eat at Chick fil-A. Dick Cheney will never die. And the Yankees will never score a run off Felix Hernandez. Ever. The world will end first. The big bang will run its course, time and space will begin to contract, and all matter - except for Dick Cheney - will be repressurized into a spec that is roughly the size of Rupert Murdoch&...
