With the Cubs wallowing in last place, there hasn't been much to write about this year (how many different ways can you say the Cubs stink?). However, with the trade deadline fast approaching, things are about to get a lot more interesting for the Cubs.
I expect to see a lot of changes to the Cubs roster over the next 6 weeks, either via trade or prospects getting called up...

Matt Garza was eligible for arbitration for the third time this year, but since he was a super two he'll have one more year of arbitration. After the 2013 season he's eligible to file for free agency. The Cubs have a few options: trade him, keep him through next year or sign him to an extension. Like most players, maximum value for the player in the trade is in the past so...

Four AZL Cubs pitchers combined to throw a six-hitter with 16 strikeouts, and the Cubs took advantage of a gaffe by the AZL Giants manager to push across two runs in the bottom of the seventh, en route to a 3-1 Arizona League Opening Night victory at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, AZ.
box score
There is a 35-man roster limit in the AZL, but only 30 of the players (of which at least ten...

Yesterday marked the end of my Brett Jackson bandwagon phase. Its entirely possible he pans out but I don't see star anymore with the way he strikes out. He has made no improvement this year in that regard in fact getting worse while his walk rate declines. On the positive side Brooks Raley struck out 7 in 7 and Rizzo stayed healthy.

Alcantara went 2-4 and Matt...

In this, their long-overdue rebuilding year, the Chicago Cubs have redefined terrible on the North Side. They currently sport an Major League Baseball-low 24 wins and have a dreadful duo of punchless offense and impotent pitching.
But they are not without trade chips as they approach a dark second half. Bryan LaHair and Jeff Samardzija — who possess an attractive blend of affordability...

Nearly four months ago, five friends and a 3-month-old goat set off from Mesa, Ariz., on the strangest journey of their lives.
With a desire to end the Chicago Cubs' fabled "Curse of the Billy Goat" and, more importantly, raise money for cancer research, the group journeyed by foot from the team's spring training home all the way to Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Casey Coleman had to leave Wednesday night's game against the Chicago White Sox after getting hit in the hand with a broken bat.
It happened in the bottom of the seventh inning as the bat of White Sox batter Eduardo Escobar shattered and the barrel of the bat hit Coleman in the knuckles.
Escobar's contact with the ball resulted in a grounder...

The Yankees don’t seem likely to trade for a starting pitcher if things continue to go the way they have for almost the past month, but if they do they prefer Matt Garza to Ryan Dempster, according to Dave Kaplan of the CSN.
Garza is much younger than Dempster, 28 to 35, and is under team control through 2013 while Dempster is a free agent at the end of the year. Garza also...

The Chicago Cubs have proved once again that they are hilariously clumsy team. They pose a .348 winning percentage, which is the 2nd worst in the entire league. In the organization’s crosstown rivalry with the White Sox, the Cubbies have a disappointing record of 7-24 against them. That statistic made Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy state the unfortunate conditions of his team...

The Chicago Cubs have yet to win a road series outside their own city. A visit to the Arizona Diamondbacks doesn't offer a promising chance to end that drought.
The Diamondbacks will try to add to their recent success at Chase Field during Friday night's opener of a three-game series.
Chicago (24-45) managed to win its first road series of the season earlier this week,...

The Cubs set did something odd yesterday other than the obvious win. They managed 5 HR's but no other XBH's and apparently they've only done that 10 times in their entire franchise history. In other rare statistical oddities, Soriano is the franchise leader at home runs and RBI's for a designated hitter with 4 and 10.

The Mariners in recent weeks touched base with the Cubs on shortstop Starlin Castro, asked the Royals about designated hitter Billy Butler, talked to other clubs about other hitters.
None of the talks progressed, according to major league sources. Virtually every team contacted the Cubs about Castro after a published report said he was available (he wasn't). Butler, too, remains...
