Cubs-castro-takes-breather
Contest reminder: Don't forget to enter our contest to win The Essential Games of the Chicago Cubs DVD set. It runs through Sunday. This has nothing to do with talent, as Castro has as much of it as anyone in baseball. This comes down too mind frame and plate approach. In my mind, Starlin Castro is as good a 2 hitter around. He’s going to make solid contact, can drive a ball into the gaps, will hit a few homers, and is the perfect hit and run candidate because he doesn’t strike out much. There’s a mindframe and specific approach for a 2 hitter and it’s just that. When you move from that spot to 5, you’re now a run producer. Your swing is going to be longer, bigger, and more powerful, making you prone to strike outs, pop outs, and weak ground balls. It also can make you prone to opening up the strike zone more. Obviously, you have to be a certain kind of hitter to hit 3-4-5 in the big leagues, but can you honestly say Starlin Castro is a 5 hitter? I can’t. — Random article I sa...

The Children Are The Future-Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by New Glarus

Iowa Tony Campana went 3-4 with a pair of stolen bases. He also somehow threw  guy out from the OF with his baby arm. So there's that. Smokies No Game Daytona No Game. Between the rainouts and off days Baez should have just stayed put Peoria Yao Lin Wang had another good start going 6 IP and striking out 4. He allowed a pair of solo HR's including one to Miguel Sano. Jorge...

The Children Are The Future-Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by The New York Times (Online Edition)

Iowa Game 1 I'm sorely tempted to just post links to this ****** team anymore now that everyone of interest is gone. But in all fairness to the Greg of Rohan he was awesome going 3-5 and raising his average to .359. Game 2 Nothing happened. Smokies Logan Watkins is a pretty salty player who just might be able to push for a starting job someday. Last night he went 1-2 with 3 walks...

How Good Is Jeff Samardzija’s Splitter?

It has not all been rosy in Jeff Samardzija‘s first season as a major league starting pitcher, but it has certainly been successful. With a 4.06 ERA backed by a 3.54 FIP and 3.59 SIERA, Samardzija has shown the ability to strike out batters at a high rate while getting his walk issues under control. He has battled inconsistency at times, mainly during a stretch in the middle of...

The future has begun for the Cubs

When Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer rolled into Chicago last season, everyone knew that the rebuilding process wouldn't be easy for the Cubs. Sure enough, the Cubs are 45-69 on August 14th, and in line for the third overall pick in next summer's draft after picking sixth this past June. Epstein and Hoyer have done a pretty good job at retooling the Cubs for the future, but...

Jeff Samardzija vs. the Astros. It's Shark Week on the DISCUBBERY Channel.

I learned the word "Cubbery" right here at TCR. And it sure seems like we've been seeing quite a bit of the DISCUBBERY Channel this year. When Jeff Samardzija broke a bat over his knee last week, do you have any idea how lucky we were that he didn't, you know, break his wrists?Cubbery! And then we wouldn't have Shark Week starting Monday night.Jeff Samardzija...

Cubs' Garza looking less likely to return this season

The Chicago Cubs have some decisions to make with their starting pitching. For the injured Matt Garza, it's beginning to look as if time might run out on a return to the rotation this season. And for Jeff Samardzija, the team says it's monitoring his workload but has no plans to shut him down. Garza has not pitched since July 21 because of what the Cubs say is a stress...

The Essential Games of the Chicago Cubs DVD Contest

This past season we used the slogan "This is a year" for the Cubs. Since the season is ending the new one unofficially beginning when this one does end, so it's time for a new slogan. Biannual Facepalm – 8.12.12

Superfriends, amalgamate! The Superfriends added a new member to the Hall of Justice this week, poaching Padres scouting director Jaron Madison for the same position with the Cubs. Fomer scouting director and draft boss Tim Wilken is being promoted to a special assistant to the GM, and the Cubs are working out a contract extension. Adolfo: Starlin Castro needs to concentrate more...

Cubs' offense goes south during 1-11 stretch

There are new faces all over Wrigley Field, but the results are starting to have an old, familiar look. And that's not good. The Chicago Cubs fell 3-0 to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. And while many observers felt pitching would be a problem after the trades of Ryan Dempster and Paul Maholm and the elbow injury to Matt Garza, it's the hitting that's been the biggest...

2012 Fantasy Baseball, Week 20 Sit Em/Start Em: Anthony Rizzo Gets The Nod

Anthony Rizzo (credits below) Hitters To StartAnthony Rizzo |Chicago Cubs| (96.5) – Rizzo the righty-killer should be on a tear this week.  The Cubs face only right-handed pitching, the type of pitching that Rizzo thrives on!  In limited action this year Rizzo is hitting .343 with a .395 OBP against right-handed pitchers.  His OPS against right-handed pitching is 359 points...

Vogelbach not worried about uncertain future

Daniel Vogelbach is working to transform his game, hoping to become a more complete player at first base. As he works toward that goal, his future remains uncertain, with Anthony Rizzo's presence in the Cubs' lineup. Vogelbach isn't concerned about what his future holds. Instead, he's focused on making improvements each day.

Series Preview: Houston Astros (38-78) at Chicago Cubs (44-69)

The Cubs are 7.5 games out of the top pick in the 2013 draft, and can pick up some ground on the loss-leading Astros in this series. The Cubs have done their part, going 2-11 over the past two weeks but barely made a dent in the Astros lead after they went 3-10 over the same span. Team Overviews This should be ugly.
