Starling Marte has returned after hurting his right hand when it was stepped on sliding into third base. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Prior to the game today the Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Starling Marte from the 15-day disabled list. Marte isn’t ready to swing a bat two handed, so he is probably only on the roster to serve as a pinch runner. With Indianapolis out of the playoffs, there would be limited opportunities for Marte to rehab his hitting once he’s ready to swing a bat two handed. He pretty much has to return straight to the majors when he’s ready to swing again. Until that happens, it’s apparent that Marte can run, which means he could be an asset to the Pirates on the bases with the expanded rosters.

Pittsburgh Pirates: The end of the James McDonald experiment

James McDonald (Courtesy of CBS Sports) The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated James McDonald from the 60-day disabled list and designated him for assignment on Saturday. The Dodgers  selected McDonald in the eleventh round of the 2002 draft, and he ascended through the team’s minor league system and made his major league debut in 2008. He was used primarily as a reliever throughout...

Andrew McCutchen shares funny encounter via Twitter

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen is the savior of a franchise who just guaranteed its first winning season since 1992. He is also a leading candidate to garner National League MVP honors when all is said and done this season. However, despite all that he has accomplished, there still appears to be some folks out there who cannot accurately recognize him. For...

Pirates pitcher Morton injures foot

Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton left with discomfort in his left foot in the second inning Sunday at St. Louis. Morton had allowed five runs on six hits and walking two in 1 1-2 innings before manager Clint Hurdle came to the mound. He left after throwing a wild pitch that bounced just in front of the left-handed batter's box, allowing Jon Jay to score and give the Cardinals...

First Pitch: Here is Why the Pirates Have Been Contending All Year

Francisco Liriano has stopped two of the four, four game losing streaks this season. If the current streak reaches him, it will be the first time the Pirates have lost five games in a row this year. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Today the Pirates lost 9-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals, getting swept in the weekend series, and falling out of first place by 1.5 games. In the process they...

Game 142: Cardinals 9 Pirates 2

This weekend went about as badly for the Pirates as you would've dared to believe that it could on Friday. Not only did the Pirates lose three times, but they got blown off of the field three times in the sort of fashion that leaves you turning the Sunday game off in the second inning when you it's 5-0 and Charlie Morton is leaving the game with some kind of injury, and telling...

Charlie Morton takes the mound with first place on the line

There have been a couple of points in the last month where it was easy to say, "If the Pirates don't start playing better, they're going to be in third place soon," but with the Reds just a game behind them, playing great baseball right now and an easy schedule ahead, we're really entering into the Third Place Danger Zone. When the Pirates went out west to play...

Why I’m anti-Pirates

Ok so we made a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates recently acquiring Vic Black and Dilson Herrera in exchange for Marlon Byrd and John Buck. We seem to have made out well and pretty much everyone seems happy with this deal. …and it is sort of nice to see the Pirates doing well after having been down for so long. In fact, it sort of gives me hope that the Mets will also see...

New guys have been key to Pirates' mastery of Cardinals

ST. LOUIS -- Forget about Pedro Alvarez being the Cardinals' nemesis. That was last year's news. After pummeling St. Louis for seven homers, 23 RBIs and a .397 batting average in 2012, Alvarez has been limited to two homers, 10 RBIs and a .169 average in 2013. Then how have the Pirates -- who have won 10 of 16 games between the NL Central's top two teams -- been able...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 141

In a game where a team scored eight runs and lost I’m seeing a lot of blame misplaced. You can talk about the insane number of men left on base last night but THE PIRATES SCORED EIGHT RUNS. Blame.  A.J. Burnett.  A 3.0 run outing?  Are you serious?  Burnett did absolutely nothing to disprove the…
