Starling Marte has been right in the middle for the Pirates early season success Throughout my last couple of articles I have shifted away from covering the Pittsburgh Pirates, but this article I am back to cover the main reason to their early season success. The Pirates are currently 17-14, 3 games back of NL Central leading St. Louis Cardinals. The reason for the Pirates success has been because of some great pitching from their rotation and from their bullpen, combined with possibly the most overlooked talent on the team, left fielder, Starling Marte. I said in my Pirates preview earlier in the season, that the key to the Pirates success would be Andrew McCutchen, and while the load is certainly still largely on McCutchen’s shoulders, he has gotten off to a slow start by his standards, batting .250 with 4 home runs and  17 RBI. Starling Marte has been the one picking up the slack for McCutchen, and the Pirates need this from guys like Marte to be able to continue to fight as the...

Pirates Notebook: Five Things We Have Learned About Pirates Hitters

Andrew McCutchen’s offensive numbers are down, but his approach is better than ever. (Photo Credit: David Hague) It’s a three-word term you will hear often early in the season: small sample size. Carlos Gomez leads the NL in batting average? Small sample size. Chris Davis is second in the majors in OPS? Small sample size. B.J. Upton is last in the NL in on-base percentage? You...

Who Could Take James McDonald’s Spot in the Rotation?

Andy Oliver could be an option to take over for James McDonald. The Pittsburgh Pirates had Jeanmar Gomez in the rotation after dropping Jonathan Sanchez last week. Gomez was expected to be replaced this weekend by Francisco Liriano. Today, James McDonald went on the 15-day disabled list, which put Gomez back in the rotation for the short-term. Liriano is still set to join the rotation...

First Pitch: Could the Pirates be 31-23 at the End of May?

We heard at the start of the season how the Pittsburgh Pirates had one of the toughest early season schedules in the game. Despite that schedule, the Pirates are 17-14, in second place in the NL Central, and sitting with the fifth highest winning percentage in the National League. They swept the Reds, took three of five against the Cardinals, and took three of four each against the...

Francisco Liriano set to make Pirates' debut Saturday

Left-handed starting pitcher Francisco Liriano is set to make his debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend during the team's series against the New York Mets, according to Bill Brink of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Liriano's debut is expected to come on Saturday, the next day the Pirates require a fifth starter. He recently appeared in what should be his final minor...

Pirates fan gets hit by home run ball in the back (Video)

Back on Sunday, one Pittsburgh Pirates fan had the unfortunate honor of getting hit by a home run ball while he was trying to run away from it. The moment happened in the top of the 8th inning as Washington Nationals outfielder Tyler Moore hit a three-run shot off of Pirates pitcher Bryan Morris into the left field seats at PNC Park. Watch as the replay shows the fan getting...

Minor League Schedule: 5/7/13

For Altoona today, Jameson Taillon will get the start in Harrisburg. He is winless in his last three outings and hasn’t been dominating like he did early on when he posted a 1.00 ERA in his first three outings. West Virginia was rained out yesterday. They will make up the game today as part of a doubleheader. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check...

James McDonald scratched tonight, headed for disabled list

James McDonald will not be making his scheduled start against the Mariners tonight and will instead be headed to the disabled list with what's being described as shoulder stiffness. Jeanmar Gomez will start in his place tonight. Last week, I would've told you that this made the impending Francisco Liriano (who should be back on Saturday ) and Charlie Morton decisions easy...

Pirates rumors: Gerrit Cole could be coming soon

Scouts who have watched Pittsburgh Pirates top pitching prospect Gerrit Cole pitch tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that "he could go now" directly into the team's starting rotation. While Pittsburgh is likely to give veteran arms -- including Francisco Liriano, Charlie Morton and Jeff Karstens -- shots at the rotation first, it appears that Cole could soon push...

Minor League Schedule: 5/8/13

There are early morning start times today for Indianapolis, Altoona and West Virginia, while Bradenton has the only night game. Nick Kingham will be on the mound for the Marauders, trying to win his fourth game in a row. West Virginia was rained out on Monday. Then they planned to make it up on Tuesday as part of a doubleheader, but weather forced them to move the doubleheader to...

Minor League Schedule: 5/6/13

Two pitchers who have been nearly unhittable this year, will take the mound tonight. Andy Oliver for Indianapolis and Tyler Glasnow for West Virginia have both had control problems at times, but each of them has been as good as anyone else in the organization when they are throwing strikes. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable...

Prospect Notebook: The Other Guys From the Hanrahan Trade

Joel Hanrahan was placed on the disabled list in Boston yesterday with right forearm tightness. I’ve pointed out in the past that the Hanrahan trade is looking good, simply because of how Hanrahan’s value has plummeted, Mark Melancon has rebounded to a top reliever, and Stolmy Pimentel has gotten off to a great start in Altoona. The fact that the Pirates got four years of Melancon...

Fantasy Baseball Dingers and Stingers: May 8

If you drafted Starling Marte, you're probably doing pretty well right now. (Credit) Week two of "Dingers and Stingers" includes an early-season high draft pick who hasn't lived up to expectations. Shall we? Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Seattle Mariners – Game 32

First things first Brad went to the Indianapolis Indians @ SWB Railriders game last night and took some video you should watch. The Pirates start an abbreviated series with the Seattle Mariners today, a  team they haven’t faced since way back in 2007.  They were 1-2 in that series and 0-3 in 2004.  So yeah,…
