The Pirates’ Grapefruit League schedule isn’t even a week old yet but yinzers are already sp geeked up about what Starling Marte has been doing that they think the Buccos should keep him in the Big Leagues to start the regular season. Starling is the Pirates’ top fielding prospect, and third overall behind pitchers Jameson Taillon and Gerrit Cole, and he’s been playing like it so far this spring. He’s played in every Spring Training game so far and he’s been by far the most consistent Bucco at the plate. But with the outfield the Buccos look like they’ll be taking into the regular season, there’s no reason to rush Marte to PNC Park – look what happened when Pedro arrived too early. Starling is only 23 and he’s never played above AA ball and that’s one hell of a jump to go from AA to the Majors in one offseason. The best move would be to keep Marte in the minors to keep progressing until there’s room for him in the Burgh. Right now, Marte is easily No. 4 on the Pirates’ outfield

Starling Marte is on fire (and the long term implications)

The biggest buzz out of Bradenton through the first week of spring training games is that Starling Marte, who's generally been ranked somewhere in the 50-100 portion of people's Top 100 prospects lists, is absolutely on fire. He's played in five games, he's 8-for-11 and he's got a double and a homer, he stole a base, and he hasn't struck out yet (update as...

Trade With Juuust a bit outside: My First Andrew McCutchen Autograph.

I completed my first trade with Kyle of Juuust a bit outside. Kyle was in need of some Trifecta assistance, and posted some bait. A certain young centerfielder's autograph appealed to me, and we had ourselves a trade. My first signature of the Pirates' stud centerfielder, who was just rewarded for his stellar play and significant upside with a long-term deal. McCutchen'...

2012 Position Previews - Shortstop

The shortstop position has a new look in 2012 thanks to the departure of Ronny Cedeno. The Pirates brought in Clint Barmes to fill the starting role, and they have a couple guys in camp competing for the back-up job. Those guys are Yamaico Navarro and Josh Harrison. I'm going to talk about Navarro in this post, because I think he's going to the guy to be there in April. However...

Pirates Fall to Phillies on Walk-Off Home Run

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Michael Dubee was going to be a long shot to make the roster, but the outcome today did not help his slim hopes. Dubee came on to pitch the tenth inning, which was most likely going to be the last inning no matter what. Luis Montanez was the first batter scheduled to face Dubee, and was also the last. Montanez hit a walk-off home run off of Dubee to propel...

Should Anyone Sign Derrek Lee?

Derrek Lee hasn’t retired just yet. According to Ken Rosenthal, Lee is looking to play during the upcoming season, but he’s looking for the “right opportunity.” Lee struggled early on last season, but managed to turn his season around upon being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates — albeit, in a very small sample. Still, Lee’s resurgence with Pittsburgh hasn’t led to a...
