Losing a plenty!

Welcome to the sixth edition of the State of the Seattle Mariners update for the 2012 regular season.  In these weekly updates you will find all the information and news regarding the Seattle Mariners Baseball Franchise.

Upcoming Match Ups

The Tigers will be looking for vengeance after the Mariners swept Detroit on their last road trip.  The M’s will then get a day off on Thursday before heading to the East Cost to take on the New York Yankees.

Recent Results

The M’s went 1-6 for the week, losing some very close games.

April 29  – 2-7 Loss to Toronto
April 30  – 2-3 Loss to Tampa Bay
May 1  – 1-3 Loss to Tampa Bay
May 2 – 4-5 Loss to Tampa Bay
May 3 – 3-4 Loss to Tampa Bay
May 4 – 2-3 Loss to Minnesota
May 5 – 7-0 Win against Minnesota

The Mariners are now 13-17 for the season.

Figgins has been pushed to the bench with Seager hitting .297.

The Good News

Hits. The Mariners offensive woes are still present, but hope is rising.  While there has yet to be consistency there are bright spots in the dark night.

Kyle Seager. This 24 year old young man has been tearing up the ball and showing middle of the line up potential. Seager, who entered the year fighting for the back up job has pushed veteran Chone Figgins to the bench.  They should trade salaries.  Seager is currently hitting .297 with 4 home runs and 16 RBI.

Home Runs. The long ball was a rare sight for M’s fans last season, unless you were cheering for the other team.  So far Seattle batters have hit 27 balls out of the park which puts them in the middle of the pack for all MLB teams.  It is nice not to be sitting at the bottom for a change.

The Bad News

Leaving runners on base. Base runners are nice but you can’t win games without runs.

Losing close games. The Mariners lead the majors in loses where they once held the lead. Snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory could be the team motto.

Roster Moves / Trades

Erasmo Ramirez as optioned to Tacoma, which was a confusing move as Ramirez was one of the only solid front end options the Mariners have had out of the pen so far this season.  However, it was explained by the team that the intention of optioning Ramirez was to stretch his arm out for use as a starter.  Seems that major shakedowns are likely to happen soon for the M’s.

Shawn Kelley rejoined the team after pitching well as the closer for the Tacoma Rainiers.  Kelley struggled to start the year and seems to have gotten his mental game under control and ready for the major league level yet again.

Mike Carp was brought back from his rehab assignment after Miguel Olivo was placed on the 15 day disabled list with a groin injury although most all the experts predict Olivo to miss more time than that.

Carp has not been playing particularity well, but has shown great stuff for Seattle in his time with the club last season.

Injury Report

The Olivo injury is the only physical one from this past week, I’m not sure what excuse the rest of the guys are using.
M’s in the Community

The M’s are still licking their wounds after a public relations snafu with the Seattle sports community.  I would expect them to stay quiet until they have something very terrific and very public to announce.

Gossip

Muneori Kawasaki, the animated back up infielder for the M’s agreed to become the emergency catcher with the loss of Miguel Olivo.  I kinda want to see that happen.  Sounds entertaining.

Division News

Albert Pujols finally entered the home run column but still has fewer than Chone Figgins.
