The Yankees began their offseason by focusing on re-signing manager Joe Girardi as quickly as possible and preventing him from hitting the open market. As Hal Steinbrenner made clear on Tuesday the team will take a very different approach with Robinson Cano. “It sounds like he wants to go out and test the market and talk to whoever he needs or wants to talk to" the Yankees' principal owner said on WFAN on Tuesday afternoon. "And that's not unusual of course. We want him back. He knows that. Within reason we're going to do everything we can to make sure that happens. But time will tell." Teams from Washington to Philadelphia to Texas could be interested in Cano who initially asked the Yankees for a 10-year deal in excess of $305 million. The Yanks might end up signing Cano to a long-term contract — although they are highly unlikely to approach the above request — but the early rhetoric is noticeably different from the talk surrounding Girardi. Last Frid...

  • They better...I mean I'm not saying they should ransom the future but if they can get him for say a 7 year deal they should pull the trigger. After all, he isn't getting any younger.

New York Yankees Owner Hal Steinbrenner Calls 2013 “Disappointing”

New York Yankees principal owner Hal Steinbrenner took to the radio today to discuss the issues surrounding team, mentioning he was “disappointed” by the Yankees’ performance this season, but reiterated several times that the Yankees are not going to break the bank this offseason to make it back to the playoffs in 2014. “It’s important, and it’s certainly a goal we take...

Yankees: Hal Steinbrenner do you think us fans are idiots?

New York Yankees inherited owner Hal Steinbrenner was on the Mike Francesa Show yesterday, and all I can say is he still doesn’t get it. Hal Steinbrenner thanking the fans… (Photo credit: JeffreyPutman) Hal acknowledged that the 2013 season was a disappointment. He also admitted that the Yankees development within their farm system has not panned out as they were hoping. And...

Mets Not Interested In Cano Or Abreu, Are In The Market For A Unicorn

Andy Martino of the NY Daily News reports that the Mets aren’t expected to pursue free agents Robinson Cano or Jose Abreu according to “major league sources familiar with the team’s thinking,” . A high-ranking team official recently told the Star-Ledger’s Jorge Castillo that Alderson’s scouts came away “impressed” with Abreu’s power. But obviously (and predictably...

Empire To Second Baseman: Nice Cano-Ing Ya!

(USATSI)Here's one reason to root for Alex Rodriguez's ambulance-chasers: if he wins his appeal, the Yankees likely don't re-sign Robinson Cano. After Hal "Tweedle-Dumb" Steinbrenner admitted on radio yesterday that The Pinstriped Posers would not give Cano the ten-year deal he wants, it became clear that much of the reason hinges on A-Fraud's doping penalty...

Cano – Barney = 78 Runs

I was reading the solidly-above-replacement-level Yankees blog rlyw.net this morning, and I came across a very interesting table. It listed the Runs Created at 2B for each team this year. I won't reproduce the whole list (seriously, check out that blog, it's interesting), but I share one thing: NYY: 123 RC CHC: 45 RC That's a difference of 78 RUNS. It's really hard...

What's up with Hal Steinbrenner's magical mystery tour?

So I see that Hal Steinbrenner made the media rounds yesterday, telling reporters and sports yakkers gems like "I think Brian [Cashman] did a great job" as general manager. (What high standards, eh? If Cashman did a great job this year, then I would hate to think what Hal considers a bad job?) I wonder what took Hal so long to finally speak out about the season. After all...

Robinson Cano Shouldn’t Expect 10-Year Deal, But Yankees Will Try to Win Him in Free Agency, Hal Steinbrenner Says

Robinson Cano may be back with New York in 2014, but that may be more because of a lack of options than anything else. Cano is a free agent this offseason at a time when long-term contracts for big stars just aren’t panning out, from Albert Pujols‘ poor start with the Angels to Alex Rodriguez‘s career continuing to go off the rails with the Yankees. With Magic Johnson of the...

Robinson Cano Nominated for the Aaron Award

Robinson Cano is one of 15 athletes from the American League nominated for the 2013 Hank Aaron Award. The Aaron Award honors the best offensive player from each league. Unlike the MVP award, where just writers get to vote, both fans and writers vote on the Aaron Award winners. The AL favorites this year are Chris Davis, Mike Trout, and Miguel Cabrera. Last year's winners...

Why NY Mets don't expect to pursue Robinson Cano, Jose Abreu -- and why that's wise

Nearly every time Sandy Alderson speaks of increased payroll flexibility this winter the Mets GM attaches a footnote that underlines his deeply-felt belief in fiscal responsibility: We're not going to throw money around he finds a way to say just because we can. Now we can apply that logic to two specific players Robinson Cano and Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu. According to...

Hal: "I'm proud of them" for staying in playoff race. Reality: Yankees went 13-14 in September

Yesterday, the billion dollar voice of Yankee owner Hal Steinbrenner appeared unto ESPN and WFAN radio, assuring his lost tribe that 2013 was an aberration, and that His Ownership will do what it takes to put the Bombers back on course next season. As Hal spoke, the Cardinals, Tigers, As and Rays - franchises that win year after year on far less than the Yankees spend - were still...

Joe Girardi signs 4-year extension with Yankees

The New York Yankees announced Wednesday that manager Joe Girardi has signed a four-year contract extension that could keep him managing the club through the 2017 season. The financial terms of the contract were not immediately known, but the Yankees said publicly that they

Report: Yanks won't pay Cano $300M

The last few weeks for Robinson Cano have been interesting to say the least. First, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported in September that the free agent asked the Yankees for a $300 million contract during the season . Then we found out in early October he may need that money to deal with claims he's a deadbeat dad . But on Tuesday, the Yankees' owner spoke, and it sounds...

Restless Yankees seek resolution on Girardi

New York Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner expressed a sense of urgency Tuesday in resolving the status of manager Joe Girardi who is receiving interest from the Chicago Cubs. "I think both sides understand and I think Joe understands and believes we need to get this done sooner rather than later because of (the Yankees' upcoming organizational meetings...

New York Yankees won't do 10-year deal with Robinson Cano

Brian Cashman, general manager of the New York Yankees, met with his scouting department on Tuesday. This was the second day of a week long plan to discuss the team's off season plans.  One part of the plan is to decrease the salary under the $189 million luxury-tax threshold.  Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner insisted that this will be done in a way that will not...

Hits & Misses: Sobering Realities, Kendrys Morales, and Clutch Walks

Sometimes, reality can be such a damn ******** I read Joel Sherman’s interview with Hal Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees, in which he discusses the decision to get their payroll under $189 million. What really stood out at me was his response to whether this was a soft goal or a mandate. “It is something to shoot for, but not at the expense of having a championship-caliber...
