Found June 15, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
Stolmy Pimentel was second on the Curve with 61 strikeouts, trailing only Jameson Taillon. Right-handed pitcher Stolmy Pimentel was promoted to Indianapolis from Double-A Altoona on Saturday, as first reported by Cory Giger of the Altoona Mirror. The move corresponds with pitcher Nick Kingham joining the Altoona Curve from Bradenton. Pimentel, 23, threw 243 innings between Double-A Portland and Altoona since 2011. This has been his best season at the level, maintaining a 3.61 ERA for Altoona striking out 61 hitters and walking 35 in 77.1 innings. The Dominican Republic native joined the Pirates organization along with pitcher Mark Melancon, outfielder Jerry Sands and infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. in a December trade that sent closer Joel Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt to the Boston Red Sox. Pimentel was dominant in April, pitching scoreless starts in four of his first five outings. After a rough May, Pimentel has returned to form, allowing three runs and striking out 12 hitters over his last two starts. In our midseason Top 20 rankings, Pimentel ranked No. 17 in the system and was part of Tier 4. He can hit 97 mph with fastball and flashes a good slider. Pimentel is currently on the Pirates’ 40-man roster.

Andrew McCutchen dances back to second base, literally, after pickoff bluff (Video)

McCutchen had reason to be feeling a little relaxed, as he had...

This week saw Nick Kingham and Gregory Polanco get promotions to Altoona. With half of the minor league season in the books, we should start seeing more and more moves. First Pitch: The Pirates Have Had Some Amazing Starting Pitching Depth

Jeanmar Gomez is one of 10 starting pitchers the Pirates have used this year. Photo Credit: David Hague Earlier today I was recording a podcast with James Santelli and Tom Bragg, talking about the rotation, and what moves would need to be made once guys like Jeanmar Gomez, James McDonald, and Wandy Rodriguez returned. Most of the conversation surrounded the fact that the Pirates...

NL Central Notes: Pirates are on a roll, but can they maintain it?

ST. LOUIS -- With a strong bullpen, solid rotation and a lineup led by one of the game's rising stars in center field, the Pirates appear poised to end the longest streak of losing seasons in U.S. team sports history. Oh, wait. You say you've heard that before. For the past two years, in fact. Indeed, 2013 is feeling a lot like 2012 and 2011, when center fielder Andrew...

Gerrit Cole's second start

One of the most interesting aspects to me of Gerrit Cole being put in the Pirate rotation slightly ahead of schedule is that it's going to force him to grow as a pitcher pretty quickly. I think that he could've pitched for forever in Triple-A the way that he did on Tuesday: hammer the zone with fastballs to get ahead in the count, then use well-placed fastballs and breaking...

Locked in and Cutched out

Jeff Locke delivered another dominant start, and Andrew McCutchen had a role in all three Pirates runs in tonight’s 3-0 win over the Dodgers. What else is there to say about Jeff Locke?  He simply shut down the opposing team’s lineup, as he’s done so often this season.  He needed just 75 pitches to get…

Dodgers 5, Pirates 3

The Pirates fell to the Dodgers in a wild, wild game on Saturday afternoon, evening this weekend’s series. Brandon Cumpton immediately caught everyone’s attention with an incredible start to his big league debut. The righty isn’t known as a big strikeout guy, but he went right at the Dodgers and struck out all three batters in the first inning – then tacked on two more in...

Game 69: Pirates 6 Dodgers 3

It's Father's Day and the Pirates are halfway to 82 wins. They got their 41st win today when Zack Greinke left a 3-2 curveball up in the middle of the zone and Pedro Alvarez whacked it out into the bushes in center field, breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth. Gerrit Cole ran into trouble in the sixth and gave the Dodgers a run back, but Alex Presley immediately leveled...
