Houston's J.A. Happ went two innings, giving up one run and three hits with one strikeout. Nationals P Strasburg makes first spring appearance

Washington Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg pitched 2 2/3 innings Sunday in his first appearance of the spring. Facing the Houston Astros, Strasburg allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three batters. He threw 26 of 44 pitches for strikes. Strasburg sat out nearly the entire 2011 season due to Tommy John surgery. He made five starts in September and finished with...

Stephen Strasburg Gets His First Start, Davey Johnson Sizes Up Bullpen

The Washington Nationals lost yesterday afternoon 10-2, but that is not what matters. It's the spring, very early in the spring, and winning and losing takes a back seat to tweaking mechanics, shedding rust, and finding roles. The good news, however, is that Davey Johnson began to vet the supposed roles for the hurlers in the team's pitching staff. As you saw...

3 Up and 3 Down – Washington Nationals

Rewind the clock to 3 years ago in an effort to gain a little perspective on the Washington Nationals’ makeover. Their opening day lineup in 2009 was: Lastings Milledge, Cristian Guzman, Ryan Zimmerman, Adam Dunn, Nick Johnson, Austin Kearns, Ronnie Belliard, and Jesus Flores. Their starting 5 was John Lannan, Scott Olsen, Daniel Cabrera, Shairon Martis, and rookie Jordan Zimmermann...

Bryce Harper's warpaint is back

Remember last spring, when Matt Stairs told Bryce Harper that his eyeblack had to go ("It's a high school thing")? Well, Stairs is gone, and so is Harper's Twitter account. But based shots of Harper on screen during the first televised Nats Spring Training game of 2012 on Sunday, it sure looks like Harper has brought back his warpaint-style eyeblack again. ...

DOs and DONTs: Washington Nationals

Washington finished the 2011 season just a game below .500 for the first time since the Nationals came into existence just before the 2005 season. While it was a big step in the right direction for the organization as a whole, outside of Michael Morse (31 HR, 95 RBI) and Danny Espinosa (21 HR, 66 RBI) there remained few legitimate fantasy options worth pursuing on the active roster...

Astros 10, Nationals 2

Given all he's been through the last year, it was hardly surprising Stephen Strasburg was ''amped up'' for his spring training debut. The 23-year-old right-hander struck out three and gave up two runs and three hits in the Washington Nationals' 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday. After having Tommy John surgery in 2010 and making just five starts...

Video: Livan Hernandez talks after Saturday start against Nationals

In the video above (via @alysonfooter), Livan Hernandez meets with the media after starting for the Astros against the Nationals on Saturday. Ingore the fact that his answers are basically inaudible (even with volume maxed out); it's good to see Livo. Now, fans in DC didn't get to SEE Livan Hernandez pitching for the Astros on Saturday, but it certainly sounded weird to...

Meet Tinkerbell.

And so, (via Adam Kilgore/Washington Post), Drew Storen has a new nickname, courtesy of Davey Johnson: Tinkerbell. ...Johnson coined a nickname for Storen based his proclivity for toying with his delivery. "I’m going to start calling him Tinkerbell," Johnson said. "He comes in with all kinds of different little moves. Once the game started, he looked...

Nationals 3, Mets 1

Rick Ankiel hit his first spring homer and the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 3-1 on Monday. Ankiel, who is working on a more relaxed batting stance, connected against Dillon Gee in the second inning, driving a 2-0 fastball over the left-field wall. The top of the batting order accounted for the Mets' only run in the first inning. New leadoff batter Andres Torres...

Astros 3, Nationals 1

Bryce Harper had a single in his first start for the Washington Nationals but Chris Johnson hit a two-run homer that led the Houston Astros to a 3-1 victory Saturday. Harper, the 19-year-old outfielder who was drafted first overall in 2010, went 1 for 3 with a hit off Astros starter Livan Hernandez in the Grapefruit League opener for both teams. Free agent signee Edwin Jackson...

F-Mart Humble After Nice Debut With Astros

Fernando Martinez had a smashing debut with the Astros today in their 10-1 victory over Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals. The former Met prospect doubled on the first pitch he saw as an Astro, but it was his second hit that had Astro fans buzzing as F-mart clobbered a towering three-run homer to left-center against a strong wind. His line for the day was: 2-2, HR...
