Stephen Strasburg will make his second opening day start for the Washington Nationals when the National League East champions open the season at home against the Miami Marlins on April 1. Strasburg went 15-6 with a 3.16 ERA last season before he was shut down after 159 1-3 innings. The Nationals did not want to tax his arm in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. The decision to keep Strasburg on an innings count with Washington headed to the playoffs was the subject of debate last season. The Nationals lost to St. Louis in a deciding fifth game of the NL division series last season. There is no innings restriction planned for Strasburg this season.

Ian Desmond revoked Tyler Moore's Man Card

In other Washington Nationals spring training news, Ian Desmond revoked "cowboy" Tyler Moore's Man Card for eating corn on the cob with a knife and fork in the Nats clubhouse on Thursday. And yes, this is more important than the cuts earlier this morning that sent Eury Perez, Nathan Karns, Sandy Leon, Anthony Rendon, Pat McCoy, Will Rhymes, and Matt Skole to the...

The best of the NL East

Welcome to our annual series of ‘best player by position’ per division across all of Major League Baseball. Our goal in this set of articles was to set forth the player from each position that is the best in the division right now. No weight was given to a player’s glorious or dubious past. So Gio Gonzalez made an appearance on MLB Network's Intentional Talk on Wednesday following his five shutout innings for Team USA on Tuesday. Here's the video: Among the interesting tidbits gleaned from the 8 minute segment: Gio has a custom Captain America bat (!?). There it is in a screencap below. Not sure "Just what the Doc ordered" is the best inscription...

Behind Wright, Gonzalez, US tops Puerto Rico

MIAMI (AP) -- Gio Gonzalez gave Team USA its best start yet, and David Wright provided a big finish. Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings and the Americans beat Puerto Rico 7-1 in the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday night. Wright drove in five runs, the last three with a bases-loaded double in the eighth. That prompted chants of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" from the crowd of...

Braves 7, Nationals 2

Stephen Strasburg dominated for five innings, then got hit hard in the sixth. Justin Upton hit a two-run single in a four-run sixth inning Monday, helping the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 7-2. Making his fourth spring training start, Strasburg faced just one batter over the minimum entering the sixth. But after retiring Christian Bethancourt on a flyout, Strasburg...
