PLAYERS: Pedro Strop
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
Chicago Cubs reliever Pedro Strop. (Photo Credit: David Banks/Getty Images) Back on July 2nd, the Chicago Cubs made a couple of trades in hopes of helping their horrid bullpen. That day they acquired Pedro Strop from the Baltimore Orioles, and Matt Guerrier from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since the two pitchers joined the Cubs bullpen, they have both performed very well. Both pitchers have made fairly frequent appearances since joining the team, each making six appearances going into tonight’s prime time match against the St. Louis Cardinals. Matt Guerrier has a record of 1-1 in his six appearances. His one loss came on their July 4th match up against Oakland, when the Cubs lost 1-0 on a passed ball. Other than that game, he has given up just one earned run and has an ERA of 1.35. In 34 outings with the Dodgers this year, he had a 2-3 record with a 4.80 ERA. So far, it seems like all Guerrier needed was a simple change of scenery. But as it turns out, he wasn’t the only player to play better after changing teams. Pedro Strop had a good year with Baltimore last year, but he struggled to find a steady rhythm early on this season. In 29 games with the Orioles, he posted an 0-3 record with a dreary 7.25 ERA. In his six appearances with the Cubs he hasn’t factored in any decisions, though he has finished off three games. Strop also has an ERA of 0.00 since joining the Cubs. How’s that for a turn around in player performance? Going from an ERA over 7.00 to not allowing anybody to cross the plate. Compared to how they started off this season, both Guerrier and Strop have turned their performances around for the better. Their improved play has helped solidify a bullpen that struggled mightily at the beginning of the year. Hopefully both players can keep up their solid performances, and continue to help the Cubs keep up their current success.

Chicago Cubs News and Notes: Matt Garza, Javier Beaz and more

This Cubs Matt Garza news and notes column is from TSB new contributor Jeremy Harris. In a gutsy performance, which could be his last as a Cub, starter Matt Garza tossed 6 2/3 innings, yielding ten hits and two walks, while striking out four. Cubs' CF Injury Updates: Brian Bogusevic, David DeJesus, Ryan Sweeney

Playing center field for the Chicago Cubs this year has proven hazardous. Brian Bogusevic just returned to action on July 11 after tightness in his left hamstring sidelined him for a week. In Sunday night's game with the Cardinals, Bogusevic left again after aggravating the same hamstring. MLB.com's Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat tweeted the update Monday afternoon: ...

Ricky’s First-hand Look at Javier Baez in Tennessee

Last week, the Cubs top prospect Javier Baez was promoted to AA Tennessee. Baez’s stat line at Daytona at the time of promotion was .274/.338/.525 after a slow start. From what I’ve seen, Baez is not a big kid but has incredible strength in the wrists. Baez is nowhere near MLB ready, he needs to establish some plate discipline and to not hack at everything in sight. The bat speed...

Brett Jackson Is Missing!

First, the news to set up:   So, I think that debate is done. The point: Brett Jackson isn’t with Iowa and isn’t on the roster given to real reporters covering the team. — Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) July 13, 2013 Tommy Birch is pretty much the Iowa Cubs’ beat reporter and he’s on his game, so if Brett Jackson is missing as reported, then we take it at his word.  That said...

All-Star Break Rumor Thread

Not that there will be too many over the break, most of the league takes a vacation along with the players, but Kaplan is spinning his wheels on a Matt Garza one. I'm hearing Garza will be traded by Sat. Cubs won't move him though until they get what they want. They won't panic out of fear of injury. An AL scout just told me that he thinks Garza is throwing so well that...

Status Of Buchholz Will Impact Matt Garza Deal

Getty ImagesMultiple reports suggest that whether the Red Sox make a deal to get Matt Garza is highly dependent on how they see the immediate future of Clay Buchholz. Garza has been told in no...
