The Reds are trying to avoid putting Drew Stubbs on the disabled list.Stubbs suffered a slightly strained oblique swinging at a pitch in Tuesday night's game. He'll miss at least a couple of games."Hopefully it will subside," manager Dusty Baker said. "We'll find out in a couple of days."Stubbs thinks he'll be all right."I think so," he said. "But I've never dealt with an oblique before. It's a very mild case."Stubbs stayed in the game Tuesday after he hurt himself but felt the injury again while fielding a ball. Stubbs got treatment and was examined by Dr. Tim Kremchek on Wednesday."I'll rest it for a day or two," Stubbs said. "If it feels better, I may begin doing a little running."Obliques can be major issues."If you end up tearing that thing, you'll be out a long time," Baker said. "We can't afford to lose Drew. He gives us defense and speed. The way he's come on la...

Reds call up Negron with CF Stubbs out a few days

The Reds called up utility player Kristopher Negron from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday, giving them another outfielder while Drew Stubbs recovers from a pulled muscle in his side. Negron played every outfield position in the minors. He batted .212 with five homers and 15 stolen bases at Louisville. Infielder Mike Costanzo was optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Costanzo appeared...

Reds call up Negron, send down Costanzo

The Reds have called up Kristopher Negron from AAA Louisville. To make room, they have optioned Mike Costanzo. The Reds point out that when Negron gets on the field, he will be the third Reds player this season to make his Major League debut, preceded by RHP J.J. Hoover and Costanzo … [visit site to read more]

Game 55: Pirates 4, Reds 5

After the Reds lost the first game of the series, I was a little nervous that the Pirates might really sweep the series and come into a tie for first. But now the Buccos will have to hope for another series to do that, since the Reds won last night, 4-5. Johnny Cueto started for the Reds, and it was Good Cueto this time. He went 7.2 innings with 3 runs (earned) on 6 hits and a walk...

Reds top prospects: Tony Cingrani promoted to Pensacola

Cingrani is no longer donning the orange and black of the Blaze. Tony Cingrani was promoted to Pensacola, following his extraordinary start in Bakersfield. He picked up right where he left off, tossing 6.2 innings of two-run baseball in his double-A debut. Billy Hamilton is still running wild with 63 stolen bases, while playing in 55 of Bakersfield's 58 games. That puts...

Best late-round draftees in Reds history

Chris Heisey is proof that you can still find major league talent in the later rounds of the draft Well, we're two days and 15 rounds into the 2012 MLB Draft and most of the highly-touted players on draft boards have been taken, but that doesn't mean there's not a diamond in the rough still waiting out there. The draft will officially conclude on Wednesday, meaning each...

Daily Brief: Down early to the Pirates

Last Game The Reds dropped the series opener to the Pirates in spectacular form, 8-4. Homer Bailey, who previously owned the Pirates, got totally lit up. Next Game Tonight Johnny Cueto (5-3, 2.54 ERA) goes out for revenge. He’s facing off against Brad Lincoln (3-0, 1.04 ERA). Cueto’s been good and Cueto’s been bad the last few starts, but we really need good Cueto tonight...

The elephant in the room

The Reds sent Mat Latos, Chris Heisey, and Zack Cozart to the Cincinnati Zoo yesterday as part of the “Zoo Day” festivities. This apparently involved hosing down an elephant. I only saw this photo on Facebook. Apparently other news … [visit site to read more]

Game 56: Pirates 5, Reds 4

Last night the Reds lost a game to the Pirates 5-4 in extra innings. Mike Leake took the mound for the Reds and gave an adequate performance. He allowed 4 runs (earned) over 7 innings of work on 7 hits. He was relieved by Sean Marshall, who worked an inning hitless, and then Jose Arredondo who did the same. Typical Reds relievers this year. The surprise was when Aroldis Chapman...

A hashtag battle begins at Noon on Friday and continues throughout the weekend series, putting the two teams' fans against each other. Squeeze bunt sends Reds over Tigers in 10

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Wilson Valdez's squeeze bunt with one out in the 10th inning scored Miguel Cairo and sent the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Cairo started the rally against left-hander Phil Coke (1-2) with his first triple of the season, the ball skittering out of the right-field corner and eluding Matt Young. One out later, Valdez...

Reds sink Pirates, 5-4

Word is this guy's alright. The Redlegs were able to wash away the bad taste left in their mouths after a loss in game one of the series against the Buccos by holding on for a 5-4 victory. With the win, the good guys move to 30-24 on the season while dropping their divisional rival to 28-26. By using the trusty blueprint of strong starting pitching, timely...

Reds 6, Tigers 5(10)

Wilson Valdez's squeeze bunt with one out in the 10th inning scored Miguel Cairo and sent the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Cairo started the rally against left-hander Phil Coke (1-2) with his first triple of the season, the ball skittering out of the right-field corner and eluding Matt Young. Battlin’ Bucs best Reds

Every win is enjoyable, but this one really meant a lot for the Pirates. It was a back-and-forth contest on the road with the division leader, and they ended up pulling it off in improbable fashion to win the series (their fourth in a row) and complete a winning road trip.  Awesome. For some reason, all the Pirates wins on this road trip started off pretty poorly. This game was...
