Found March 11, 2013 on Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Sunday was a pretty excellent day for Bucco fans…or about as good as a day of spring training could possibly be. Plenty of big names were in action at several different locations. First of all, Jameson Taillon was quite impressive in his big World Baseball Classic start for Team Canada against Team USA. He posted a solid line (4 innings, 4 hit, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts) and definitely showcased his stuff in front of a giant audience. Taillon–who hasn’t pitched above Double-A (although he has thrown a few big league spring training innings) was throwing an upper-90′s fastball and held a lineup full of MLB All-Stars in check. He struck out Jimmy Rollins on 3 pitches, got Ryan Braun looking on two nasty curves (which made Bucco fans everywhere smile), and also punched out Shane Victorino. He was limited to just four innings because of the WBC’s pitch limit.  I don’t think there’s much video of his outing anywhere, but here’s a GIF of Joe Mauer whiffing at some high heat and h...

WBC Notes: Taillon Looks Good Against Team USA

Jameson Taillon got the start for Team Canada against Team USA in a crucial game. He was on a 65 pitch limit due to WBC restrictions on each pitcher. The winner of this game advances to the second round, the loser goes home. Taillon started the first inning with a ground out from Jimmy Rollins. He was throwing 95 MPH early, throwing mostly fastballs as the shadows in front of home...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Wasted money

(Follow me on Twitter @jim_krug) One of the consistent excuses to explain the Pittsburgh Pirates’ lack of competitiveness over the past two decades is the “small market, low payroll” answer.  That in itself should frustrate to fans, because when Pirates’ ownership financed the building of $216,000,000 PNC Park- a large portion of which using taxpayer dollars- fans were...

Pirates Notebook: Pitchers Buying Into The Pickoff; Burnett Has His Best Outing

A.J. Burnett picked off a runner in the first inning today. It’s starting to become a familiar sight this Spring to see a Pirates pitcher picking off a runner at first. On Thursday, James McDonald started the game by allowing a single, then erased the runner with a pickoff to first. Today, A.J. Burnett started the game the same way. Darin Mastroianni started the game with a single...

First Pitch: Phil Irwin a Serious Contender For the Rotation?

Heading into Spring Training, the 5th starter battle seemed to be a two-man race. There was Jeff Locke and Kyle McPherson, with guys like Jonathan Sanchez and Jeanmar Gomez competing, but both having an outside shot of making the team as a starter. So far Locke and McPherson haven’t stepped up, and neither have Sanchez or Gomez. One pitcher is stepping up with the numbers, and...

Pirates Have Five in the FanGraphs Top 100 Prospect List

Marc Hulet of FanGraphs has released his top 100 list, with five Pittsburgh Pirates prospects making the cut. The five players are the usual suspects that have been on every other top prospect list that has been announced so far. Coming in at number six was Gerrit Cole. Only one pitcher was ahead of Cole, and that was Dylan Bundy, who came in at number four. Jameson Taillon came...

Can Jeff Locke or Kyle McPherson make an impact with the Pirates?

I wrote this last week, but screwed it up in the CMS editor and somehow didn't realize that it hadn't run until yesterday. Sorry about that. It doesn't take a long look at the Pirates' pitching staff to find room for Jeff Locke and Kyle McPherson in 2012. Francisco Liriano is still nursing his goofy non-throwing arm injury, Jeff Karstens has a bum shoulder that...

Pittsburgh Pirates 2013 Team Preview

The Dread Pirate: Pittsburgh’s newest chosen son. Lets face it, the Pittsburgh Pirates being relevant again would be good for baseball. Other moribund teams have enjoyed short revival runs that energized their fan base and became the league’s big story for that given year. The Pirates haven’t finished a season over .500 since the first President Bush was in office. I still...

Pirates 7, Twins 4

Andrew McCutchen, Gaby Sanchez and Tony Sanchez hit home runs, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Minnesota Twins 7-4 Sunday. Jonathan Sanchez, in his first spring training start and fourth appearance, gave up two runs and two hits in two innings. Sanchez has an 11.81 ERA in 5 1-3 innings during the exhibition season. Minnesota's Liam Hendricks, making his fourth spring...

Roster Watch: Alex Presley

My Dad absolutely loves Alex Presley.  Presley isn’t unlike the Josh Harrison‘s of the world in that he plays hard and is a bit of an overachiever.  Commendable qualities for sure. He also hates being referred to as Elvis in any way. That’s unfortunate because we have this photoshop in our library.  Therefore we have…

De Vries only gives up one hit in 5-4 win

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- A.J. Burnett prepared for his opening-day start by allowing two runs and two hits in 4 2-3 innings Saturday in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Cole De Vries made his second start and fourth appearance of spring training for Minnesota and gave up one run -- not earned -- and one hit in three innings. Minnesota's Ivan De Jesus...

Yankees have interest in Derrek Lee

In their efforts to find a replacement first baseman until Mark Teixeira comes back from injury, the Yankees have contacted retired slugger Derrek Lee about a possible return to baseball, according to David Waldstein of the New York Times. Lee is said to be interested in the situation, but no deal is in place as of yet. Lee, 37, last played in the majors in 2011 with Baltimore and...

Draft Prospect Watch: Week Four Recap

The fourth weekend of the college baseball season has come to a close and we saw some power from one of the top draft-eligible third basemen on Saturday after he had just one extra base hit coming into the game. Mark Appel showed why he will likely go well before the Pirates make their first selection with the 9th overall pick, and then select again with the 14th pick. The two third...

Roster Watch: Wandy Rodriguez

Sometimes I look at Wandy Rodriguez and think he is just a Hispanic Ron Perlman.  That picture is one of those times. I mean just throw a cut on him and imagine him presiding over the next SAMCRO meeting. Does anyone still watch Sons of Anarchy? Seriously.  After the whole cartel is actually the CIA…
