After signing 2B Kelly Johnson and RP Kyle Farnsworth, the Tampa Bay Rays needed to make a few roster moves. The addition of Johnson made many speculate that the Rays would have to making some moves to clean up an already filled roster with several middle infielders. In order to accommodate the signings, Tampa designated two players for assignment, Elliot Johnson and Reid Brignac. The two players designated by the Rays for assignment are out of options and cannot be sent back to the minors after the move. The Rays will now have 10 days to either trade, release or put the two players through the waivers process. Johnson has been a successful utility player for the Rays and Brignac played the primary shortstop position for the Rays during the 2011 season. Both players told reporters that they were looking forward to continuing their professional careers elsewhere in the majors after the move was announced.
