By Dave BuscemaThe Sports Xchange NEW YORK -- The ball started to fall, dropping into what New York Mets starter Dillon Gee called "the Bermuda Triangle," in shallow left-center field. Gee watched it on television in the trainer's room, his victory and his team's in jeopardy in the top of the ninth inning as Chicago Cubs right fielder Bryan LaHair's blooper seemed destined to fall and put the tying run on base. There was one out and a runner on second in what would eventually be a 3-1 win for the Mets on Saturday at Citi Field, but the game seemed set to get tense. Mets center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis had no shot at the ball. Left fielder Scott Hairston sprinted in, but the ball was too shallow. Shortstop Ruben Tejada sprinted out, but it appeared too deep. From his spot at first base, Ike Davis, who had hit a two-run homer to give the Mets a 3-0 lead in the third, thought "Oh no," as he recalled later. "It looked like it was going to d...

Ruben: He’s Not Just a Sandwich. He’s Our Shortstop

Ruben Tejada has been fantastic at the top of the Mets lineup. Let’s hop in our blue and orange Delorean and type in the date Dec 4 2011.  Now let’s get this bad boy up to 88 mph (faster than a Chris Young fastball), and go back in time. “John from Queens, you’re on the FAN”, comes over the radio as the car appears on Roosevelt Ave.  ”Tanks fuh takin’ my cawl.  Tuh...

Post Game: Mets 3 Cubs 1

Gee was brilliant today tossing 8 innings only giving up a single run. Dillon Gee pitched a great game today. His fastball had spectacular movement from the 1st inning on, and his curveball was working for him all game long to go with his changeup. Gee’s final line was 8IP, 7H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 4K. Gee will finish the 1st half of the season with a 4.10 ERA, which is not too bad for...

Gee Your Pitcher Smells Terrific

So apparently R.A. Dickey was available out of the bullpen on Saturday. Presumably because the All-Star break is coming up and Terry Collins wanted to get him some work in case Tony La Russa decides to be the fly in the punch bowl and not pitch him because he's scared that two all-star catchers can't catch a knuckleball. But also perhaps because Terry's bullpen, which...

Gee, Mets shut down Cubs 3-1

By Dave BuscemaThe Sports Xchange NEW YORK -- Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum hoped Jeff Samardzija's last start, when he gave up one run in seven innings in a win against the Braves, would help him forget the pounding the New York Mets put on him last month at Wrigley Field. It may well have, but the Mets still managed to push just enough runs across on home runs from Ike...
