The Texas Rangers have been playing playoff quality ball this week. Lets take a look back at how far they have come and what they still have ahead of them. Texas had a 3 game series against the Houston Astros in the beginning of the week. If they were ever going to make a last push for playoffs it had to start on Monday. Texas bore down and swept the Astros winning 12-0, 3-2, and 7-3. Those 3 wins were crucial as Texas was boosted into the second Wild Card spot. In all honesty, everyone expected the Rangers to win those games. However, it was crucial that Texas played top-level baseball so that they didn’t accidentally lose and slide back in the Wild Card standings. After the Astros series Texas played host to the Los Angeles Angels. The four game series vs the Angels was the last series of the season for Texas. If a playoff run was going to happen it had to begin with the first game on Thursday 9/26. Oh boy did it! The Rangers won Thursday’s game on a pinch-hit walk off homerun by Jurickson Profar in the bottom of the 9th. Rangers fans will remember Profar’s late game blast for years to come. The deep fly came after Texas had committed a record-setting 4-error inning previously in the game. As worrisome as that is, Profar was able to calm everyone’s nerves with one swing of the bat. The next two games were both close ones for the Rangers as they beat Los Angeles 5-3 and 7-4. Sunday’s game was the final game of the regular season for the Texas Rangers. They were tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the second Wild Card spot with the Indians .5 games above them in first place. The Rays faced the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday after having lost two in a row to the Canadians, and came out with the 7-6 win. That meant that Texas needed to win their game in order to tie Tampa Bay for the second place position in the Wild Card. They did! Texas stepped up to the plate and took a 6-2 victory away from the Los Angeles Angels. Giovany Soto played a big part in Texas’s victory as he scored in the 5th on a Craig Gentry single, doubled in the 6th to score Beltre, and then hit a solo home run in the 8th. Alex Rios has been a big part of the Rangers success in this current six game winning streak. In the last week Rios is hitting .310 with 8 RBI’s. He also has been active on the base paths with 4 stolen bases. The midseason acquisition of Rios from the Chicago White Sox is really paying off for Texas. With the potential return of Nelson Cruz the Rangers outfield has a lot of strength. Texas now will play a tiebreaker game Monday against Tampa Bay to determine which team will move on to play Cleveland for the Wild Card. The Indians have been playing some lights out baseball recently and will get a much needed day of rest tomorrow. Texas has come a long way but the Rangers aren’t in the clear yet. Look forward to tomorrow night’s game at 8:07 (ET).
